"If he misses another season for injury, we can apply for a sixth year," (VT compliance director Tim) Parker said. "As soon as they miss the second season for reasons outside their control, at that point they can apply for it. As a practical matter, we usually wait until sometime deep into their fifth year [because some athletes aren’t sure they want to return to college for a sixth year]. You can apply for it as soon as that second season is missed, even if it’s not in the fifth year."
Why Darren Evans will not get a medical redshirt for this season
According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch's Darryl Slater, Darren Evans can't apply for a medical redshirt for this season because he has already used his redshirt. If he misses another season due to injury (like Kenny Lewis likely will or Toney Baker), then he can apply for a sixth "medical hardship" year.

A silver lining, albeit miniscule, is the timing of the injury. He’ll obviously be granted a medical hardship year should he ever choose to apply for one.
Thank god this didn’t happen a game or two into the season. He could’ve nursed the “pop”, or sprain, or whatever injury he first felt on Friday until the season began. Anyone know if there is objective criteria for granting the hardship year? It is black and white (i.e., must happen prior to season), or if Evans had hurt his knee in the ’Bama or Marshall games, could he still apply?
he doesn’t get a medical hardship for this season. he has to miss ANOTHER season before he can apply for a sixth year.

Oops. Thanks for the clarification.
That’s clearly a downside to automatically red-shirting your first year on campus that I never understood before. Wow, so most likely only three seasons of playing for Evans.
correct. at most, evans will get to play two more seasons for the hokies.
