2009 ACC Football Predictions
Furrer,
I strongly disagree with your prediction that Duke will go 3-9 this year. Duke went 4-8 in Coach Cutcliffe’s first season, which was an incredible achievement given that he inherited a team that had had won a total of 2 games in the previous 3 years. He’s now had a year to turn Duke into a better team. I am predicting that Duke will win 6 games this year but won’t be bowl eligible because two of the wins will be over FCS
teams—Richmond and NCCU—only one of which will count for bowl eligibility.
However, I do think it is possible that Duke could get another win if an opponent takes Duke lightly because it has, of course, been the ACC doormat for so many years.
my problem with duke
is its schedule. the blue devils will have an improved product on the field, but it wont show in the win-loss record.
home acc: vt, umd, gt, wake
the only one they have a chance of winning is wake.
road acc: ncsu, uva, unc, miami
theyre not winning on the road this year, either.
duke is getting better, but its schedule doesnt work in its favor. until the blue devils show theyre capable of beating mid-level acc teams (and do it on the road), theres no way im picking them to do something similar to what vandy did last year.

2009 ACC Footbal Predictions
I predict that Duke will beat both UMd and Wake at home and UVa on the road. I also see the possibility of a win at NCSU or UNC. Last year Duke played both roughly equal until wilting in the 4th quarter. Duke has more players and they are in much better shape than last year because Cutcliffe recognized last year’s problem. I thus think Duke won’t wilt in the 4th quarter like it did last year, which could result in a win over a team that takes Duke lightly.
we'll see
i like cutcliffe a lot, but don’t think they’ll have the same improvement in win total than they’ll have on the field. i think he’d even admit he doesn’t have enough guys who are actually capable of playing in a bcs conference. johnson faced the same at vandy. briles is facing the same at baylor and harbaugh the same at stanford.
all four of those school have coaches who are capable of winning there. itll be interesting to see which ones actually turn the corner.
