Virginia Tech 45, Central Michigan 21: Morning After Stream of Consciousness
According to the text I got from Joe yesterday, "we finally looked like we thought we'd look," so I'm looking forward to watching the game on DVR and breaking it down more. I'm still depressurizing from the whirlwind of a day I had Saturday and haven't watched the game or read anything on it, so there's not a whole lot to discuss here.
- First and foremost, we have to ditch the white helmets. They look horrendous no matter what jersey they're paired with. Seriously, I never want to see them again.
- The first thing that stands out to me in the box score is 0-for-8 on third downs. That has to be some kind of record. I'm interested to see how on earth we managed to not convert a single third down and still scored 45 points.
- Looks from the stats like Central Michigan did what we thought it would do and stacked the box to stop the run. That allowed Tyrod Taylor to have a pretty big day.
- More to come later.

This team...
is starting to remind me of 2007 Michigan. Strong running game, senior quarterback, 0-2 start including loss to FCS school. Hopefully though, we don’t have to see Logan Thomas starting games yet.
Pirates, Vikings, Hokies. I'm used to heartbreak. At least I have the Penguins....

i'm tired of the uniform mix and matching.
maroon helmets, white or maroon jerseys, white or maroon pants.
thats it. please.
My thoughts
Probably off as usual but here we go:
1. While I was watching the game I noticed something particular on defense. No linebackers ever make tackles on run plays. They may blitz and make a play in the backfield but they’re just not good enough to shed a blocker and make a tackle. It’s either the Dline or a safety.
2. The pass D has gotten amazingly better. I actually feel very confident across the board with them.
3. Still way too many arm tackles. Tackling is AWFUL!!!!
4. Tyrod is still overrated.
4a. Amazing scrambler. Absolutely amazing.
4b. Cannot hit a pass over the middle to save his life. (too short?)
4c. Locks on to one receiver and either throws it into triple coverage or takes off immediately.
In the end, we won and won handedly, which is the way it should have been. But if you’re using this as a barometer for the November gauntlet, then we’re still not gonna beat UNC and Miami on the road. Too many missed tackles. Most of the scores were off of absolutely horrific tackles/angles. Need much better run D. But we have time to fix those things. Let’s hope it happens. This D continues to get better.
One reason for the linebackers
is that we’re playing a lot of two-linebacker sets now with JGW out and Exum in the game. Add to the fact that Lyndell Gibson didn’t have a very good game and there’s your answer. Taylor was a beast, though.
