What Are Your Expectations for Virginia Tech Basketball in 2010-11?
The football team's bye week seems like the perfect time to talk some hoops prior to the start of the 2010-11 season. The Hokies will open a season filled with high expectations at 7:30 p.m. EST on Friday, Nov. 12 at home against Campbell.
The Hokies are ranked No. 23 in the preseason coaches poll and were selected second by the media in preseason ACC voting. Outsiders obviously have high expectations for the upcoming season, but what do you hope the Hokies accomplish in Malcolm Delaney's senior season?
Delaney has one more year to make his first NCAA Tournament. We know he's a remarkable talent that led the ACC in scoring a year ago and hopefully this year the whole country will get to see how good he is. The only way for that to happen is to live up to the hype, make an expanded NCAA field and possibly make a run in the tournament.
Tech's four other starters also return in addition to Delaney, but depth could be an issue. Florida transfer forward Allan Chaney will likely miss significant time with a heart condition, senior forward J.T. Thompson is out with a torn ACL and sophomore forward Cadarian Raines is still recovering from a broken foot.
And if the Hokies do make the NCAA Tournament, they'll have to make a run with no players on their roster who have played in the Tournament and with a coach who has one win in three NCAA Tournament appearances in his 20-year head coaching career.
So what do you expect out of the Hokies this year? Will a trip to the Big Dance be fine with you or do expect more?

We have a basketball team? I kid I kid. Honestly, I don’t know what to expect out of our team. Part of me wants to believe that we’re going to be very tough team to beat but the other part of me wonders if the same old stuff will happen (the losses by 1, 2, or 3 points, the inexplicable losses to teams we should blow out).
I think I’d say just making the Tourney for now, the loss of JT Thompson is something that will be interesting to watch as far as how the team adjusts.
Hoop Dreams
The Hokies will probably pick up where they left off last year. They’re scrappy enough to hang with most anybody, but their major flaw is they have no big man. There will be many times that the Hokies will be flashing 4 guards and a small forward on the floor. You can win a few in the ACC that way, but if you’re going to the Final 8 or Final 4 in the tourney, you’ve got to have a big guy in the middle.
Period.

high hoops hopes
Looking forward to a great year, just hope they can live up to the hype (unlike their pigskin counterparts). Will definitely be missing a big man at times during the season but I think they will fair well. The tougher schedule will definitely make or break our season. Hope Greenberg can pull out some of the close games this season he hasn’t been able to the past few seasons.
no to be negative, but
you know how we expect to win 10 games in football every year … i expect N.I.T. every year in basketball.
i hope they prove me wrong.
