Virginia Tech's Malcolm Delaney Among Top 50 Candidates for Wooden Award
Virginia Tech guard Malcolm Delaney was named to the John R. Wooden Award's Preseason Top 50 list on Monday:
The list is comprised of 50 student-athletes who, based on last year's individual performance and team records, are the early frontrunners for college basketball's most prestigious honor.
Delaney was one of eight players from the ACC on the list. In 2009, he led the league in scoring with 20.2 points per game and was among the leaders in assists (4.5 apg) and free throw percentage (.842). He was unanimously voted first-team All-ACC following the regular season.
What do you guys think are Delaney's chances at the Wooden or any of the national awards? As he goes, so will the Hokies so if he has a Wooden-caliber season it will certainly mean good things for the team. And he'll have plenty of chances to showcase his talents to the nation with Virginia Tech's beefed-up schedule. Right now, the team is scheduled to appear on ESPN or ESPN2 eight times, with more appearances possible.

Delaney...
Not a huge surprise. But I’m going to disagree that as he goes the Hokies go. With the injury to JT Thompson and the uncertainty with Allan Chaney’s heart condition, I’m going to say as Jeff Allen, Victor Davila, and Cadarian Raines go the Hokies go. Certainly Delaney is a key member of the team, but he’s a known commodity. Allen is an enigma, Davila may be an even bigger one, and the quantity of Raines’ play makes him impossible to evaluate. We are REALLY thin in the post, and I even think we are dangerously close to slipping back out of the field with the injuries we have. And as for Delaney’s chances, I think that there will be too much balance for him to win the award. Certainly more balance than we have had in the past. Part of Delaney averaging 20 a year ago was that he had to average 20. I know that may seem to contradict what I said above about us now maybe slipping out of the field, BUT I do think we have the scorers to get it done, which accounts for the more balanced scoring, so in my opinion, that’s not the issue. Post play will be crucial. If we beat K State or Purdue and do an okay job with the rest of our schedule though, we should be going dancing.
