The "Bud Foster to Vanderbilt" Rumors Begin

Foster_watch_vandy_01_medium

December is still a couple of hours away, but one of the sure signs of that month is already here. The first rumor linking Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster to a vacant coaching job involves Frank Beamer's long-time Lieutenant and Vanderbilt, whose interim head coach Robbie Caldwell resigned prior to the Commodores' final regular season game.

Star-divide

The first place to connect Foster to Vanderbilt was a site called Football Scoop, which on Monday said their sources had told them "Vanderbilt intends to talk with Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster sometime after Saturday." Saturday of course meaning the ACC Championship Game against Florida State.

Tuesday saw several much more official source tackle the rumor, including Foster himself. Darryl SlaterKyle Tucker and Norm Wood already have stories up after talking to Foster about the possibility of heading to Vandy. He told reporters he hasn't been contact by Vanderbilt.

The job could interest Foster because the Commodores are in the SEC and thus would be the BCS-level coaching job he desires. However, as all three writers point out, Foster has avoided jobs in the past that he considers "coach killers" (though he didn't call Vanderbilt that) and Vandy is a tough, tough place to win football games.

On the Commodore side of things, Foster isn't being mentioned by either The Tennessean or SB Nation's Vanderbilt blog Anchor of Gold as being on Vandy's radar yet. The Tennessean reports the apple of Vanderbilt's eye is Temple head coach and former UVa defensive coordinator Al Golden. Anchor of Gold would love to see Mike Leach get the job (Doesn't every fanbase?).

For now, we're introducing the Bud Foster Alert System and moving it up to Guarded. There are positives and negatives, Foster hasn't dismissed the job and there's at least an inkling that at some point he could become a candidate. Nothing to get excited about yet, but that could change if Golden says, "No," and the 'Dores have to look elsewhere.

I'm sure this won't be the last we'll see of our advisory system.

Hah

LOVE the graphics. Props for that. And although I think we are pretty safe from Vandy stealing Bud, (as you mentioned, he’s been reluctant to take jobs where he couldn’t compete from Day 1) I do feel like this is the year he goes. I don’t know why, but I just have that feeling.

Vandy

Vandy’s not a guaranteed coach killer. Gerry DiNardo turned three 5-6 records in four years there into the head coaching job at LSU back in the early ‘90s. Of course, LSU had just fired its worst coach ever, but still. You don’t even have to go to a bowl there to get outside interest, and Bobby Johnson could have left for another job if he wanted to. His abrupt retirement last summer pretty much indicated that he never wanted to, though.

So yeah, it’s not the worst thing in the world, especially given how down the East division is now. Not that I expect Foster to go there. His job at VT is great, so he can hold out for something better.

No Way

Bud is not gonna leave for Vandy, this shouldnt even be brought up anymore since they are givin him that huge bonus if he stays the next 4 years, i’d say he splits after that if he doesn’t get the VT program, but hes not gonna leave and miss out on that huge payday, Vnady would have to pay a whole lot to get him to leave, not only should it be LOW, but VERY LOW

The annuity

in my opinion, is only enough to keep him from taking another coordinator job. Schools live Vanderbilt could easily offer enough money for him to leave for a head coaching job. Plus, it’s a head coaching job, which is what Bud has said he wants.

Vandy is attractive...

Any HC job in the SEC is attractive. SEC is cash cow, so if he is successful, that’ll make him more money than the current annuity, whether that raise comes Vandy or another school. It doesn’t matter that Vandy is historically bad in the SEC, either. Just look at South Carolina, Spurrier took that job and now they’re in the SEC title game. A chance for success in the self-proclaimed “elite” football conference should be reason enough.

Damn

Before I read the article, I thought Bud Foster had killed all the terrorists and the TSA finally dropped their warning level below orange for the first time. Back to getting raped in the security lines.

Funny stuff..

Good one, VTinACC, that cracked me up. As far as Coach Foster leaving, I’m probably one of the only people I know who would encourage it. If Vandy, or any program can sweeten the pot enough to entice Bud enough to ditch his current deal with the Hokies, I say go for it.

Got to let these guys try out their wings if they so desire. It’s obvious Bud wants to be a head honcho somewhere, and it’s not happening at VT any time soon. Let him go if he feels he needs to. He’ll probably be back in a few years anyway.

I agree

That way when the VT job is ready they will be more inclined to offer it to him. He will also have experience as a head coach and we will see less turn around time for Bud to bring home the wins (if he even has success in the position that is).

Ramifications of Bud Leaving?

What are everyone’s thoughts on how badly our program would suffer from losing Bud?

I think a lot about this issue and I can’t decide how bad it would be. Obviously Bud is a top defensive mind, his reputation brings in top recruits in the region and his skills produce awesome defenses nearly every season. Is it conceivable that he can be immediately replaced by someone who also has a great ability to recruit and produce excellent defenses, or is there definitely going to be a drop off? Are there names out there that VT could attract that have big reputations so it wouldn’t necessarly be a huge issue, or is the likelihood that there is no one accessible to VT who could replicate what Bud has done and his leaving would have a noticeable lasting effect on the overall performance of the program?

Maybe we could lure away Al Groh or hire Randy Shannon as DC

LOL! But seriously, I hope this doesn’t happen. Don’t think it would be catastrophic for the program, but would certainly dent our defensive performance. I really do hope that a few years down the road, Foster succeeds Beamer as HC.

Randy Shannon & Al Groh

If Bud goes, and I really hope he doesn’t, Randy Shannon has to be on our list. He is a really good DC and his recruiting prowess in the state of Florida would be a great addition. It would also be nice to get some diversity in the old white man club of a coaching staff we have. But, would he take a job of a rival of his alma mater a la Al Groh? segway…

Al Groh is a terrible DC. Name one season his defense has been elite when Bill Parcells wasn’t the head coach? Also, he has proven to be a mediocre recruiter at best.

Wiles or Gray could be interesting… I think they both have produced great Units, and we do recruit really well along the D-line and D-backfield. But would Bud take Wiles and/or Gray with him??

I worry this might be the year...

His defense has been relatively poor this year and there will be a new QB. He’s been waiting patiently for the right opportunity, and this might be it. If he left, knowing Beamer who’s all about consistency in his coaching staff, I could definitely see him promoting Wiles or Gray to DC. But Bud would be extremly missed as the MLB coach, too. Think how many LB’s he’s developed. Ahh I don’t even want to think about this.
