Signing Day 2010: Virginia Tech Recruiting Open Thread

Use this post to discuss Virginia Tech's 2010 recruiting class. HokieSports will have it's annual recruiting ticker set up to inform you when the NLIs roll in.

ESPN and Rivals have profiles on the players the Hokies have commitments from and ACC Sports Journal has a breakdown of the state's top talent.

Star-divide

I'll be surprised if the Hokies' final class isn't the same as its 21 current commitments. Most appear to be solid and I doubt Tech will add anyone else.

The only other prospect the Hokies might have a chance at is James Louis from Atlantic Community High School in Delray Beach, Fla. Atlantic is a strong recruiting pipeline for the Hokies and Louis' quarterback, Mark Leal, is already on the Tech campus.

While there is some speculation about how strong Louis' commitment is to Ohio State, I think Louis will honor his commitment to the Buckeyes.

While there may not be any drama surrounding Tech's signing day, I would still like to hear what you think of Virginia Tech's class and if you think the coaching staff addressed any key issues you think it has. Fell free to fire away in the comments section.

Up for Debate

  • How good is Virginia Tech's signing class?
  • Who is the best player to sign with Tech this year?
  • Will any true freshmen have an immediate impact?
  • What player could be the biggest surprise?

As usual BCO hit the nail on the head. We’re building from the inside out and that’s a damn good thing. I also think, like many others, that think Nick Dew can really be a stud in Foster’s defense. Finally, I’m excited that we inked two promising quarterbacks (Leal and Young) who will be afforded time to develop.

Like the focus

Definitely like how they went after talent on both sides of the trenches as that’s where we need our most improvement over the next couple of years. If Curt Newsome can’t get it together after a couple more years, then its definitely time to move on. Definitely didn’t go after the skill positions this year, but we should have plenty of depth there for the next few years. Here’s to hoping that these new OL-men can protect Logan for the next few years.

Up for Debate

How good is Virginia Tech’s signing class? Most have this class in the 20’s. I think we it is reevaluated in a few years it will be close if not a top 10 class. Like you said Beer control Working Mans class which is VT Football.

Who is the best player to sign with Tech this year? Nick Dew he has a possibility of developing into 3 possible positions so its really interesting where Bud will decide to put him he could go Whip LB, Rover or FS. He also maybe a kid that plays this year.

Will any true freshmen have an immediate impact? If you ever talked with Coach Cav none all need to be redshirted! But possibly Zach McCray at DE it is where we lost the most so if comes in tearing it up with his speed and ability he maybe starting.

What player could be the biggest surprise? Chase Williams son of Saints DC Gregg Williams at 6’3 235 coming in he could be the next great Linebacker from Tech and the Kid is smart. / Jerome Lewis TE out of upper Ny has the Physical tools to be a good pass catching TE 6’4 240. Its one of the guys that did not get much attention bc he was in upper Ny, but as always looks like Coach Cav and boys can find those diamonds in the rough.

How good is Virginia Tech’s signing class?
This class has the potential to be the cornerstone of (dare I say) our first national championship. It lacks the sexiness of a class that includes a highly sought after QB (no disrespect to Young or Leal), RB or WR. However, it does address some of VT’s serious problems of years past, the trenches. BCO rightfully notes this. Frank Beamer himself regularly notes that the further you are from the ball, the sooner you can come in a compete as a youngster. It may not have one particular guy that can come in right away and make a huge impact, but this class is full of guys who will be studs in three or four years.

Who is the best player to sign with Tech this year?
In the coach’s minds, it has to be Zach McCray. I have never seen Beamer hint at happiness on the recruiting trail except for the day McCray stopped by practice and surprised everyone by committing. In fact, he mentioned it on the Beamerblog that day… I believe it was during the summer. In my mind, McCray has the fast-twitch abilites of a Corey Moore and the natural frame of a Chris Ellis. Most impressive on film, McCray shows an uncanny ability to use his hands to ward off potential blockers.

Will any true freshmen have an immediate impact?
Probably not. Again, the further away from the ball the better off you are in terms of PT in Beamer’s world. However, we are seriously low in terms of depth at TE. Lewis shows a good ability to stretch the field from that spot, which is something that the Hokies haven’t seen in quite a while from that position. The last person that comes to mind was a healthy Sam Wheeler. The only thing that will hold Lewis up from becoming an impact player at TE in my mind is Logan Thomas, especially if JuJu outduels him for the 2nd string position. Thomas needs to get on the field, and if he can play an H-back kind of role this season that would put Lewis’ playing time in jeopardy. Nonetheless, I think Logan earns the backup QB spot and Lewis has the opportunity for PT.

What player could be the biggest surprise?
Chase Williams. Hardly a surprise to most Hokie fans (according to ESPN he was a SuperPrep All American and was considered a 4 star recruit by some websites), he was not the most highly rated guy out there. In fact, VT and Miami were the only BCS conference teams to offer. However, he looks physically ready to be a quality backup at Mike pending the outcome of the Bruce Taylor project and has the makeup of a coach’s son. Quality recruit.

I think Nick Dew could have an impact. Do those safeties waiting in the wings following Chancellor’s graduation really have all that much advantage over Dew? Not in my opinion. It may take a while to get Dew acclimated to Foster’s defense but you never know. Look how well Hosley played in the few snaps he got at CB.
