2010 ACC Tournament: Greensboro is Upset City (Plus Rooting Guide for Virginia Tech Fans)

2010_acc_bracket_medium

Turns out misery loves company. After the Hokies were upset in the afternoon session by 12th-seeded Miami, both 2-seed Maryland and 3-seed Florida State went down in the night session. This is bad news for the Hokies NCAA Tournament chances because two teams that are out and one team on the bubble are still alive for the league's automatic bid.

Tech needs to root for ... ugh ... Duke to win the tournament and keep Miami or NC State from stealing a bid and moving the Hokies farther down the ladder toward the NIT. Georgia Tech is probably in the tournament thanks to its win over Maryland, but I'm not willing to take any chances. We need Duke to take care of business.

Star-divide

Here's a run down of who Tech fans need to be rooting for in the conference tournaments:

Atlantic 10: Anyone but Rhode Island. The Rams are probably lower than the Hokies on the bubble.
Big Ten: Ohio State and Purdue. Illini and Gophers could steal a bid.
C-USA: UTEP. Houston is nowhere near being in the tournament.
MWC: Not San Diego State. The Aztecs are lower on the ladder than the Hokies, but still probably in the tournament.
Pac 10: Cal. Washington is down on the bubble and Stanford is out. Game in progress as of this post.
SEC: Anyone but Mississippi State. The Bulldogs could be left out without an automatic bid.
WAC: Utah State. Aggies might have an argument even without an automatic bid. Leave nothing to chance.
