SB Nation Mock MLB Draft Includes 2 Hokies
John Sickles from SB Nation's Minor League Ball release a mock draft for the first round and first supplemental round for the 2010 MLB Draft today. Two Virginia Tech players, Jesse Hahn and Austin Wates, were included. He considered "signability, projected budgets, and past drafting patterns" for each team in his mock draft.
In the first round, Sickles has Hahn going 16th to the Chicago Cubs:
There are some injury issue with Hahn but kidney stones are a temporary problem and the Cubs are known to take some risks in the first round.
Last week, SB Nation's Andy Seiler of MLB Bonus Baby had Hahn going 21st to the Minnesota Twins in his mock draft.
In the supplemental round, Sickles has Wates going 49th to the Texas Rangers:
Like (West Virginia's Jedd) Gyorko, Wates seems a logical pick for the Rangers considering their number of picks and their financial situation. He's toolsy and flashes enough skills to slot here.
The MLB Draft starts June 7. Be sure to keep an eye on Minor League Ball and MLB Bonus Baby for coverage of the draft and to see where Virginia Tech's players might end up. The Hokies will likely have their highest selected play since 2002 (when Joe Saunders went 12th overall to LAA) this season.

Draft
Hahn’s offspeed pitches are going to need a good deal of work and will need to be used much more often if he has any chances of being a starter at the next level. If not, he’s in the pen and likely a closer. That would be unfortunate for someone with his frame.
Wates is interesting. He is a guy that i think will progress through the minors quickly but doesn’t have that high of a ceiling. He is fair in the field and doesn’t have a “true” position. That’s nice because he is flexible and versatile, but teams will have to settle on him at one position because he isn’t great at any. He is small by firstbaseman standards and probably to doesn’t have enough pop to play there. I also think Wates’ numbers, like many other players, are inflated. Taking a look at how he has hit against top tier pitchers is interesting. He did hit a solo HR off Deck McGuire who is a stud, but McGuire struck Austin out in his two previous at-bats. He went 1-3 against Danny Hultzen of UVA with the hit coming in his 3rd at bat again. 0-2 vs Matt Rein. Eric Erickson struck him out 3 times. 1-3 vs Hernandez of UM. 0-2 vs Pat Dean of BC. He went 1-2 against Tyler Wilson.1-3 with 2k’s vs Tyler Thornburg.
These are all guys that are big time college pitchers. You expect the top pitchers to get hitters out, but you also expect the top hitters to get hits. He hasn’t hit the best pitchers as well as a 1st rd pick should.
