Basically, what this tells us is that
they dominate their conference, which is very, very weak with the
exception of Fresno every once in a blue Moon and Hawaii for 2 years
with Colt Brennan,

don't schedule jack OOC (at least one FCS opponent every year and
only 9 games vs Big 6 [4 were bowls]),

are average against the Big 6,

aren't great when coming east to play Big 6 teams,

are average against ranked opponents,

put up good defensive numbers against poor offenses,

put up great offensive numbers against horrible defenses,

and are average against top 30 defenses.

The more i think about this matchup

The more i see us dominating in classic Beamerball style…

Pound the rock, bruise them with Evans and slice them with Williams.

Play inspired defense, the upside to our 2010 unit is very high,

Create turnovers, and execute special teams…

LETS GO HOKIES!!!!!!

Rant over :)

Call me a pessimist...

…but I see a team that is 4-2 against ranked opponents in the past four years.
…one that ended last season as a certain top 5 team and only lost one starter
…one that consistently ranks very high in objective statistical rankings (nullifying the weak schedule argument)
…and one with a chip on it’s shoulder about no national respect, playing on a very national stage.

To be fair, it is fairly pointless to compare past teams to the present (I’m sure you don’t want their fans bringing up losses to East Carolina) although in the case of Boise State, this year’s team is the same as last year minus one great player but with a year of added experience for every other starter.

Not saying it’s not winnable, just that they’ve proven an ability to beat big teams on big stages, and an average record in this situation doesn’t make this a win for us, just winnable.

We always have a talented defense but inexperience can be a killer as we saw last year when we made a certain experienced defensive player a safety starting against Alabama.

Boise is great but...

what is their record against BCS schools with only one week to prepare. Note how their big wins come in the first game of the season (Oregon) and the last game of the season (Fiesta Bowls). Not so easy week to week in a real conference when every team can beat you if you don’t play well. This is why I hate that the game was moved. If Boise really wants to get in the title game with the big boys then they need to play BCS schools back to back on their schedule in my opinion. Although this year’s arrangement is not their doing.

?????

Don’t hate. You should be mad at VT for not keeping the first date. A game is a game, those teams got the same time to prepare as we did

Note how their big wins come in the first game of the season

vs.Oregon in 2008 was in week 3 or 4. Oregon was ranked at the time, and it was on the road at Autzen Stadium. Oregon State in 2006 was also week 2 or 3 at home, home opener I believe.

Not so easy week to week in a real conference when every team can beat you if you don’t play well.

Any team in the WAC could beat Boise State on any given week as well. They just have rarely been able to do that. That’s more of a testament to the Broncos strength than anything else.

If Boise really wants to get in the title game with the big boys then they need to play BCS schools back to back on their schedule in my opinion.

Boise State’s opening slate this year looks like this;

9/6 @ Va. Tech (although it is in D.C. it’s esentially a home game)
9/18 @ Wyoming
9/25 home opener vs. Oregon State
10/9 vs. Toledo

It isn’t back to back, but it’s an improvement.
Wyoming and Toledo aren’t juggernauts by any means but they aren’t doormats either.
No FCS teams on the line up. Which I like personally. I know Boise State came from the Big Sky, but it doesn’t mean they need to play their old rivals every year.

Boise State - The best in all the land (The "land" being Idaho, and large parts of California, Oregon, and Nevada.) Now also including Fort Worth, TX and coming soon this fall, Washington D.C.!

Here's my problem with

the conference debate in Boise’s case. At this point, Boise is getting every team’s best shot from week to week because they want to be the WAC team that takes down Boise. So while the Hokies and Beavers are playing tougher teams week-to-week, the teams the Broncos are playing consider them their bowl game.

Every two years Boise has to go to Honolulu and Ruston in the same season. Last year they had to do it in a three game span. I’m sure Boise fans are as upset about that scheduling quirk as I am about the fact Virginia Tech has to go to Boston and Miami every two years. We’re the only team in the ACC that has to do that.

And this is relevant how?

All that matters is 2010. It doesn’t matter what happened in 2004. Why would that matter? We don’t have any guys who played on that team. 2009 is probably the only indicator of what this team is capable of(ya heard? 21-22 starters.) Keep goin though, I hope Beamer and crew think like you guys. Ask soon-to-be 2nd round draft pick Lagarette Blount what he thinks of BSU’s weak team? O ya, he wasn’t drafted, rushed for negative yards, hit Byron Hout, and got suspended. Lets just hope Ryan Williams/Darren Evans don’t act like sore losers.
       Thank you, and good day

Sadly I Agree

They’ve been building a program since 2002 and it’s officially been built. Their real advantage in this game is coaching as Beamer never seems to coach OOC, neutral site games well

Thank you

I must say, you guys are much better than Oregon fans. I like when fans notice that we haven’t been here too long, but we’ve been building since day 1.

Keep thinking that VT is the same team as Oregon

I hope Petersen and crew think like you guys. I hope they figure, " we beat Oregon last year, so we’ll beat VT" . Just so you know, this WILL be your toughest test to date, sans that UGA game.

by Wesmont on May 7, 2010 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Several things...

Firstly, bsu415, not to question your research but I am almost entirely sure that the reason for moving the game was network television motivated. There is no way in the world that Virginia Tech would have been pro-moving the game to an earlier point, especially considering what they have coming back. Usually in early season games, experience wins out. It’s paramount. Beamer knows that. I’d just find it hard to believe that Virginia Tech would be doing anything to get a game moved forward when their defense is in need of some extreme seasoning.

Having said that, I am apprehensive about the outcome of the game. As VTinACC pointed out, we don’t have a good record in OOC openers against high-profile opponents, ESPECIALLY not in neutral sites. We tend to come out of the gates hot in these games and then flatten out as the game goes on. I guess that’s a stab at Mike Gentry in S&C as much as anyone else.

In an un-Bud Foster-esque style, I expect this to be a high scoring, most high-octane on the day wins. As much improvement as I think our O has made, we still forget who’s behind the wheel…the guy who ALWAYS seems to lurch from a dead start as the season progresses. But the point is the beginning of the season is the dead start. And for what I think is going to be a dissecting of our defense by one of the top picks in the 2011 NFL Draft, quarterback Kellen Moore, I think we will need a VERY well-oiled offense on that day. Especially considering that we are going to be working with somewhat of a reworked O-Line, and are banged up there as well. We shall see. We certainly cannot treat Boise with the amount of respect that Oregon did (or rather lack thereof) last year. Anyone who watched that game knows that 1. game was a misnomer, and 2. that their defense made a very good Oregon offense look absolutely dysfunctional! Bsu415 is absolutely right about that.

But…I would not be bragging about the Legarrate Blount ordeal. I don’t at all support Blount for doing what he did, including the pre-game festivities…and certainly he had it coming…BUT I think what Byron Hout did was incitement. Pretty much anyone else I spoke about it felt that Hout should have spent the exact same amount of time on the bench last year as did Blount…yet he got off scotch free. It reminded me of the Pacers vs. Pistons brawl of ‘04, when a guy like Artest is punished inordinately based on his reaction to the aggressor’s (in this case I’m talking about Hout’s incitement on the field) action. It didn’t help that he was taunted and even punched by at least one Boise fan while exiting the field. In Hout’s case, yeah you won…DOMINATED and that should be enough to shut him up. Be the bigger man and don’t stoop to his level. I love Boise State’s program, but I lost a lot of respect for the program as a whole for the off the field stuff that day.

As for Williams/Evans, I don’t think either of those guys are like that. They’re more even-keeled. Certainly they won’t go out in the media and slam the Broncos before the game. Likewise, Williams is in a completely different league than is Blount. In years of watching good Virginia Tech tailbacks, I will objectively tell you that Ryan Williams is the best (objective because he’s not my favorite), and is undeniably one of the top 2 running backs drafted in ’11.

Agreed

I got a little carried away. It’s just that Oregon fans were insane last year. I guess I was expecting the same ignorant comments. And I hope you are right about Moore. Scouts don’t like his height, or his deep ball. But the deep ball is improving, and I don’t see why a team wouldn’t take a chance on him. I guess scouts don’t know who Drew Brees is. I’m just worried about containing that 3 headed monster of a backfield. IMO, if BSU scores a couple early, it’s gunna be real hard for Tech to keep up. Someone compared BSU’s fball team to a great basketball team. They score in great spurts, and if Tech allows that, it’s all over

By the way...

I’m from Chi-town as well(assuming you are). These 2 teams are much better than watching the Bears or illinois. I can’t stand any chicago team outside the bulls, and they look to be in turmoil.

A couple numbers were left out...

Record against BCS team under Chris Petersen: 4-1 (Washington, 2007)
Three of those wins were against ranked opponents.

Boise State has been in the WAC since 2001, not 2002. They went 7-2 in Conference play that year, losing to La. Tech and Rice. There WAC record is 69-4. They have never lost a conference game at home.

Last, but probably most important, All-Time Record: 354-144-2 (.710)

Why is it important? Boise State is, and always has been, a winning program, at every level. This is not new to us. They have two national championships (1958 NJCAA, 1980 DI-AA)

In the 42 seasons of football as a four-year institution they have FIVE losing campaigns. The last one was 13 years ago in 1997 (5-6). Their second year as a D-IA program.

Since 2000 they are;

the winningest team in the country: 112-17 (.849)

the highest scoring team in the country: 41.4 points per game with an average margin of victory of 21.5 ppg

Sure you can say that any of these numbers are in fact inflated by having to play poor teams in conference. But in doing that you would be missing the point. Boise State has long been a formidable opponent. Assuming they are weak because there competition is would be supremely ignorant. Espescially after they just beat TCU team that many thought, should have been considered for a National Title. How much we forget in four months time.

Losses to Louisville or Georgia 5-6 years ago mean little now, and will mean less in September.

In the words of Joelestra above;

Not saying it’s not winnable, just that they’ve proven an ability to beat big teams on big stages, and an average record in this situation doesn’t make this a win for us, just winnable.

Put hope in the fact the your Hokies and Coach Beamer are probably not being as dismissive as you are about Boise State’s weak schedule and conference. Because if they are, they’re already in trouble.

I have a gut feeling

I have a feeling that Beamer and the rest of VT’s football staff are at least as good as you when it comes to accessing the talents of opposing teams. Just to be sure, I’ll drop them an e-mail reminding them about Oregon, and how good Mikrino says they are.

VT fans MUCH better than duck fans

At least you guys acknowledge that we might have a pretty good team this year. Last year before the OU game the trash talk from duck fans was off the scale. Looking at the season right now the VT game is going to be the biggest single test.

As a BSU fan I have confidence in our coach to put together a good game plan. The one thing that people really don’t take into account is BSU’s coaching. Coach pete brings a winning attitude and he is one of the best coaches in the country bar none.

Good luck on your season next year hokie fans and may the best team win.

I believe all Viking fans must be masochistic!!

Louisville 2004

This team was in Conference USA in 2004…just sayin’.

They were a midmajor. If you are going to call the loss to them a loss to an AQ, then give us credit for the time we beat them as beating an AQ.

BSU don't need smoke and mirrors to get the job done, they got orange pants.
