Paul Woody Thinks Things!
Paul Woody of the RTD recently got a look at Virginia Tech's shiny new locker room and came away thinking athletics departments should stop building shiny new things. So he wrote a column that said the NCAA should stop athletics departments from building these shiny new things. Except Woody neglects to tell us WHY he thinks this. Wait a minute, isn't that the whole point of having a sports column? The only conclusion he draws is that building shiny new things will "threaten the competitive balance in college sports." Anyone here know what that means or how it relates to locker rooms?

It means the colleges with the nicest amenities will draw the best athletes. But does he think this is something new? Been going on forever, and isn’t limited to locker rooms… or even amenities really. Other factors would include the amount of attention athletes get at more traditional powers, the quality of coaching at more traditional powers, etc… There is not, nor will there ever be, competitive balance in college sports. So trying to complain about one of the reasons that’s true is pointless, since if you can’t resolve all of the reasons you haven’t resolved anything.
