A Few Things About Virginia Tech's Aug. 21 Scrimmage
[Ed. Note: Bumped from FanPosts.]
So I am not going to lie and say I am very critical about how the team looks. These are my observations from the average fan. For starters, the main focus of today seemed to be offense and more specifically, red zone offense. Tyrod Taylor played well today. His passes were on for the most part and in the right places for his receivers. He had a nice TD pass to Dyrell Roberts in the endzone that was in a position where only Dyrell could catch it towards the sideline. Some say that is good, some say bad, but from the looks of it, he placed it there. He threw one INT but it was a sick play by Bruce Taylor. Bruce was behind the ball and was able to reach both hands out and snag it without any bobble.
Other QB notes...Logan and Ju-Ju looked decent. Both were not entirely accurate and both had their issues. Ju-Ju threw one INT nowhere near his receiver while Logan had a fumble in the backfield. Logan appeared to be more comfortable though as there were more times when he would scramble and pick up solid yards.
Other things to note on offense, Ryan Williams looked very hungry and was playing very well. Evans was often seen with the 2nd team offense so it was hard to judge his abilities but he looked like he was better than his form in '08. Wilson and Gregory also received several carries. Wilson showed his power by needing about 3 or 4+ people to bring him down. Still no word on whether he redshirts though. Other highlights included Cris Hill with 2 blocked punts.
On another note, I spoke with a member of the coaching staff about the team and more specifically, Bruce Taylor and Barquell Rivers. He said Bruce is quicker than Barquell and has stepped up to fill the spot very well. I see game experience being the only difference between the two so this is good news. The bad news though is that Barquell will probably be out for about the first 4 to 5 weeks. The coach I spoke with wishes that Barquell would get a medical redshirt but doesn't see Barquell wanting to sit out for the season. He also mentioned that it may be tough for Barquell to work his way back in since Bud likes to rotate those linebackers in and out.
Finally, here are the direct stats brought to you by HokieSports. Taylor and Thomas combined for 140 yards and 3 TDs. Cris Hill had 2 blocked punts. Tyrod was 7 of 9 for 95 yards. Thomas was 6 of 16 with 2 TDs. Ryan Williams had 46 yards on 9 carries, Wilson had 38 and 6 carries, and Gregory had 44 yards on 9 carries.

uh oh
I don’t like those numbers. Hopefully those #s mean the D is lacking and not gelled yet. Please let that be the case.

It was #1 O against #2 D
for the most part. The running backs played against the #1 D with a different QB under center but other than that, Tyrod was normally playing against the #2 D except for a few plays, such as his pick by bruce taylor
does it really matter
I think not.
Sept 6th 13 days and counting.
