Virginia Tech 24, North Carolina 21: A Return to Winning Ugly

When Logan Thomas found D.J. Coles in the back of the end zone to put Virginia Tech ahead 24-7, most assumed the game was over. I did, the Hokies did, the announcers did and obviously the crowd at Lane Stadium did because all of us phoned it in the rest of the way.

Instead, the Tech offense did very little and North Carolina scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to make it interesting in what turned out to be a 24-21 Hokie victory.

Star-divide

Tech really only played well in quarters two and three and it was enough to beat the Tar Heels Thursday night in Blacksburg. It was a game that neither side seemed terribly interested in playing and in which both teams made mistakes that would have come back to bite them against teams that cared.

On defense, the Hokies gave up yards in chunks until UNC freshman running back Giovanni Bernard suffered what was reported to be a concussion with about five minutes left in the first half. That injury, coupled with replacing Barquell Rivers with Jack Tyler at mike linebacker, helped stop the Tar Heel ground game and allowed the Hokies to build their lead in the middle two quarters.

Logan Thomas had a successful night, completing mostly screens and swing passes to take advantage of the soft coverage Carolina showed by playing its cornerbacks back most of the night. These dinks and dunks finally set up a deep route to Jarrett Boykin for a 39-yard gain on third-and-nine that paved the way for the touchdown pass to Coles.

While Thomas played well, David Wilson found little traction against a Carolina front seven that was good enough to take away the cut-backs he usually thrives on. UNC's defensive line was dominant most of the night and was able to hold Wilson to 82 yards and get constant pressure on Thomas, resulting in two sacks.

The defense, which went from looking terrible in the first quarter to like the best in the ACC in the second and third, went back to terrible in the fourth quarter when it gave up a couple of big plays that led to UNC scores.

First, Dwight Jones had a 20-yard catch that put the Heels at the VT 25-yard line that resulted in a touchdown. Then, with under four minutes to play, Bryn Renner completed two long passes, including a 64-yarder to a wide open Erik Highsmith that put the Heels at the Hokie two yard line.

The good news is that it didn't matter. UNC scored, but touched the ball illegally on the onside kick. Want more good news? Tech won despite suffering what was probably a let-down after the win against Georgia Tech. This game didn't matter in the standings and the Hokies still wound up on the right side of the scoreboard. There are plenty of teachable moments from this game for the coaching staff without any of the drawbacks of losing.

Also, we won't have to face UNC's big and talented offensive and defensive lines next week. Virginia has much-improved lines on both side of the ball, but they don't have quite the size and experience we saw tonight from UNC. The Hoos will probably still give us a dogfight, but it will be one we have a better chance of winning up front.

Carolina was a formidable foe. We knew the Heels were a talented team, they beat us physically on both sides of the ball and they took advantage of most of the mistakes we made. This game could have been a blowout and probably should have been, but the fact it wasn't is a testament to how talented Carolina is and how much execution matters to this Virginia Tech team.

When the execution is there and we're playing a team we can dominate up front, we get games like we saw last week against Georgia Tech. When it's not there and we play teams with talented linemen, we get games like we saw tonight against Carolina.

Bone Collector

I realize coming into this season J. Hosley was a first or second round draft prospect…but after seeing him play the past couple of games, I have come to one conclusion: he’s not ready for the bigs yet. He was torched all night long by a much taller, stronger receiver. But hey…at least he proved important in one big category tonight: laying the wood. Tonight showed his remarkable ability to inflict pain on our opponents (unintentional of course), making his small 5’9" frame at a buck-sixty felt in the secondary. I hope the ’heels players are okay, but great job to the defense in playing aggressive. Last year: Interception King. This year: Bone Collector. Go Hokies!

VTinACC's Score Prediction

VTinACC’s prediction (VT 25.7 – UNC 20.9) was almost perfect this week, bravo.

10 - 1 !

Given the negative comments I’ve read about this victory, you would think VT needed a miracle comeback against Saint Mary’s of Assisi Women’s college.

The Hokies beat a team loaded with blue-chip future NFL talent that had an extra week to recuperate and prepare after a bitter loss to their in-state rival, while VT was coming off a grinding and emotional game against GT.

Less than 8 days ago VT was 8 – 1 and now they have their 8th consecutive year with at least 10 wins – amazing! – and are well situated for a run at 13 – 1.

I’m not complaining.

You guys won by?????

you guys won by having bad ref’s. To bad calls in a drive. the pass inerference call (C’mon) And the fumble. Take those calls away and Hokies would have lost……
Go to the tiltle game and let Clemson walk on you again
Congrads on another 10 win season Frank deserves it. But that NC throphy case will stay empty for a very long time.

We cannot afford to purchase players....

like other programs. However, refs are very affordable, and are on sale this time of year. It’s a bad economy, but we do what we can.

Granted there were some calls I thought were suspect

The Pass I call I think you’re talking about was when it was an un-catchable pass. I don’t know. Haven’t seen replay, just saw it live. But live it didn’t look like much. So I’ll give you that. I’m not quite sure what the fumble you’re referring to. North Carolina played a pretty good game and I knew they would, but without some huge defensive gaffes on our part and a turnover on the game’s first play from scrimmage it could’ve been a bigger margin. Saying that a pass interference call made or broke this game is looking at the game with an eye-patch on (you’re only seeing what you want to see).

As for the Clemson game, you’re dead wrong there. Even before their wood-shedding tonight at the hands of NC State I KNEW if we went to the title game that we were going to beat them if we showed up. 100% certain. They are nowhere near the team we saw on Oct. 1 and the Hokies aren’t either. We let their hype beat us.

Well I completely butchered the paragraph beginning with “The defense…”. Pass the tylenol.

Defense concerns me

A win is a win at this point in the season, but I was a bit disappointed that our defense did not get much pressure on Renner. We were fortunate that our run stopping was solid, and that Renner threw some crappy passes. Also, our secondary got lucky a bunch of times with bad passes and/or dropped passes. If/when we play Clemson again, we need to get consistent pressure on the QB if we are to win. For better or worse, I think our team gets pumped for big games and plays a lot harder than usual, so I’m just hoping for a defensive clinic against Clemson.

2 Things Really Stick Out for Me

Until it recruits NFL-level linemen, VT will struggle against the teams with NFL talent in the trenches. VT, as shown last night, will beat teams that lack excellent coaching. But I don’t think they can dance with the big boys that have a similarly talented coaching staff. Maybe VT will prove me wrong in 2013, when they meet up with ’Bama once again.

Second, the VT coaches have a really special QB, yet, when UNC cut the lead to 10, they decided to play like they had S. Glennon behind center. They need to keep pressuring, no matter the stakes. If they tried to score on that drive, I think they would have with the UNC defense tiring out. That would deflate the Tarheels, and VT would have looked dominant in a 31-10 win.

However, a win is a win and VT has played well when it mattered. I hope UVA wins on Saturday, so we can see a fully charged VT team next week.

Good points

It all starts in the trenches, on both sides of the ball.
