Bryan Stinespring is Reportedly No Longer Virginia Tech's Offensive Coordinator
WOW. QB coach Mike O'Cain now the #Hokies' O-coordinator. Stinespring to coach TEs and OTs. Newsome to coach interior linemen.
Well, you all got your wish. Obviously we'll have much more on this as the day goes on. Feel free to use this as your comments thread for the news.
KT summed it up: Wow.
Update: Bryan Stinespring is still the offensive coordinator, but Mike O'Cain will call plays.

Well, that's not entirely fair to Mike...
He’s a good man and a GREAT quarterbacks coach. The development of Tyrod Taylor as a passer I think is testament to that fact.
I just think his offensive playcalling is from a different era when teams passed to keep teams honest in the run game, rather than running to set up the pass. It’s conservative.
Now, is it possible Mike learned a few tricks since his days at NC State? Sure. But if I recall, Clemson fans weren’t all that enamored with his playcalling when he was there under Bobby Bowden (granted, I believe he replaced Rich Rodriguez when he left for West Virginia, so it was quite a shift in philosophy).

I think they should have brought in Friedgen.
I think he’d be a great fit.
Fridge
would make a great OC. He kicked ass at Georgia Tech.

It would have been great
But I’m assuming that since we just pulled in Shane Beamer and Cornell Brown as coaches while keeping Hite and Cavanaugh on payroll in those administrative positions, our budget may be running low. I don’t think Weaver would let us fork out the cash.

Maryland is paying him
too much money to sit at his lake house. He’ll probably be back in coaching next year.

We can wait. Let O’Cain develop Thomas a little bit, then bring in Friedgen next year as OC and ditch Stinespring for good.

Stiney won't be fired
he’s been way too loyal. he’ll get some office job.

WOW is right!
I agree with a lot of things said already. It is about time that Beamer did the right thing with regards to this situation. I definitely understand being dedicated to your staff. That IS important. But there comes a time when there is dead wood that has to be cut down and disposed of properly. Stinespring has been a liability for a number of years now and probably cost us both ACC titles AND a shot at the NC. You cannot fault Beamer at all for giving Stiney plenty of shots to make up for the issues he had but when there is ceiling on what someone can bring to the program, you have to make a change.
I am suprised though that Friedgen was not brought in as the OC. He is a great offensive mind and the only thing that would be a drawback would be his age. I just hope that O’Cain does better than he did with NC State. Living here in Raleigh, I remember the days of whineing that occurred when he was there. It trust Beamer to have made the right call.
Surprising
Prior to last season I would have been all for replacing Stiney as the OC. But he seemed to make huge strides last season with his “feel” for a game. And to replace him with O’Cain? I’ll have to see this how this works out. I do like Stiney returning to the 757 as a recruiter. he was a beast in that area.
I chalk up last year to TT....
The guy had a helluva year.
WOW like everyone else
Frank Beamer has not only shocked Hokienation but perhaps the rest of college football this offseason, bringing in new youngblood to the program and finally after 8 dreadful seasons having stiney step down. IMO O’cain has shown his worth with how he took TT and formed him into a complete Dual Threat QB, look at TT’s numbers and how they rose every year under O’cain. 2nd Stiney is a great recruiter with the OC off his plate VT can start feasting on the 757 again. Also his OL coaching Skills are great so the OT’s should improve. This also is a chance for Newsome to shine he gets the Guards and Centers if they do not show vast improvement in 2011 then he must go.
The next step will be by far the most difficult.
Frank Beamer is alleviating the fear that he might pull VT football down with a Bowden- like long torturous grey fade, but he still needs to take the final big step.
He needs to have the wisdom to decide that he will retire when his contract is completed.
Knowing that he would retire in a few years would enable Beamer to give greater effort in his remaining years and would also energize Bud Foster and make it almost impossible for another school to lure Foster away.
It would also set up an ideal timeline for VT’s head coaching future with Foster getting around 10 years followed by Shane Beamer.
