Schlabach: ACC is Unhealthiest BCS Conference
Today, ESPN's Mark Schlabach graded the overall health of every BCS conference football team 1-5 based on the following criteria:
5: Consistent winner with potential to be BCS bowl contender every season
4: Potential to join the sport's elite in the near future
3: Recent mediocre results but seems to be building momentum
2: Recent success but seems to be headed in wrong direction
1: Below-average program with little success in past or future
The good news for Virginia Tech fans is that the Hokies were one of six programs who were given an overall grade of 5 and the only one in the ACC. The problem for the Hokies' conference comes when you look at the average grade for all six BCS conferences.
| Conf | Teams | 5 | 4 | 3 | 2 | 1 | Avg |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SEC | 12 | 2 | 4 | 4 | 1 | 1 | 3.42 |
| Big 12 | 10 | 1 | 4 | 2 | 3 | 0 | 3.30 |
| Big Ten | 12 | 1 | 2 | 4 | 4 | 1 | 2.83 |
| Pac 12 | 12 | 1 | 1 | 4 | 5 | 1 | 2.67 |
| Big East | 8 | 0 | 1 | 3 | 4 | 0 | 2.63 |
| ACC | 12 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 8 | 1 | 2.42 |
| Total | 66 | 6 | 13 | 18 | 25 | 4 | 2.88 |
Surprisingly (or not surprisingly), the ACC came in D.A.L. in average grade from Schlabach. You can debate whether or not the Hokies deserved a five, but if they hadn't, the ACC would be one of two conferences lacking a "5" team and the conference's average would dip to 2.33.
Should the ACC be ranked below the Big East? The conference's biggest problem is the perceived gap between the top teams and the rest. Meanwhile, the Big East is in an odd state of flux where teams that have been doormats (Syracuse and Louisville) are on the rise while teams that dominated in recent years (Cincinnati and Rutgers) are seeing their stock plummet. That's why the Big East stayed very close to the middle with no teams receiving a 5 or 1.
It would be interesting to see how Schlabach would rank these teams at the end of the season. There are some teams whose current health probably deserves a 2, but I think will improve this year. Still, while I'm used to the ACC deservedly receiving no respect from the national media, it's a little disheartening to see three-fourths of the conference's teams receive a 2 or lower.

This is retarded.
I like Schlabach, but he bounces between team and program whenever it is convenient.
'11: Minimum Goal: Win 10 games again
'10: 7th in offense, 41st in defense. Division Champions. 10-4. (6-3)
'09: 3rd in offense, 107th in defense. 7-6 (4-4)

I noticed that too.
It was pretty uneven. MOST of the rankings were fairly spot-on, but he didn’t always stay true to his own criteria.

I tune Schlabach in and out
He’s got some good analysis and some bad analysis, usually depending on the questions his interviewers pose to him. However, in this case, working on his own volition, I’d have to say he’s pretty much spot on. I don’t want to seem like a homer, in feeling like we should be above the Big East, but to be honest, it’s elementary to be arguing over who should be dead last and just treading water.
What is sad
is in 2005 I had an argument on my submarine with some fellow sailors. We were ranking BCS conferences and where each one fell. At the time I argued that it should have been the ACC 3rd, or at the least 4th. My point was the with Miami and VT now in there, along with the dominance of FSU we are going to be in contention for BCS national title every year. I said, come on, we all know FSU and Miami are going to turn it around soon, they have just had a few down years. Now I have to eat my words and my only argument is if we are better than the big east. How sad…
The Big 10+2
Schlabach revised his scoring on Ohio St. with everything that has recently happenned so they’re now behind the Pac-12 with a 2.58. Just thought I would throw that out.
Did Schlabach update his rankings?
Cause when I looked at them now they’re different from what you have.
First off, there’s only 5 teams with a 5 ranking (not 6), and they are VT, Oklahoma, Oregon, Alabama, and LSU.
Secondly, your totals for the Big 12, Big Ten, and SEC are off. It’s more like this:
Conf / #of 5/ #of 4/ #of 3/ #of 2/ #of 1/
ACC / 1/ 1/ 1/ 8/ 1
Big 12 / 1/ 4/ 2/ 3/ 0/
Big East / 0/ 1/ 3/ 4/ 0/
Big Ten / 0/ 2/ 4/ 5/ 1/
Pac-12 / 1/ 1/ 4/ 5/ 1/
SEC / 2/ 2/ 4/ 3/ 1/
That gives you averages of:
ACC – 2.42
Big 12 – 3.30
Big East – 2.63
Big Ten – 2.58
Pac-12 – 2.67
SEC – 3.08
Still not great for the ACC, but we’re not as far behind as we thought. Also, Vanderbilt and some of those lower SEC teams really brings down the average.
LET'S GO CAPS!!!
Looks like
He updated them after the Ohio State stuff went down.
