VT beat themselves, they were the more dominate team.
My Virginia Tech Hokies could not buy a call tonight. I normally never complain about the referees, but I am tonight, They flat out sucked. As for Virginia tech, y'all had the game won, but y'all made so many stupid penalties that y'all lost the game for yourselves. Virginia Tech was the better team tonight and dominated most of the game, it is just ashame that the score says otherwise. It was just a sad game to watch overall, VT needs to make one big change and that is firing their offensive cooridanator, Bryan Springstine (he can't call a good play to save his life) I mean the running game was not there tonight so why keep trying to make it work! Just about everytime Tech threw the ball they were successful. I just don't understand the mans freaking play calling! However, I would like to thank VT's defense for playing such a great game. Better luck next year Virginia Tech, y'all beat yourselves tonight along with bad offensive play calling and a couple awful calls from the ref, the worst one being the crucial one at the end which was horrible. That was a freaking catch!

The things I learned in New Orleans
1. VT wins that game any other day.
2. It’s good to see that our players care about the bowl games.
3. I still do not know the rule on what is and what is not a catch in college football.
4. Although I am a big supporter of Frank Beamer, that fake punt was possibly the worst call I have ever seen him make. If your going to go for it, go for it.
5. I know what it feels like now to watch us dominate an opponent and wind up on the losing end. VT has been on the flip side of that coin many times in recent years. It happened a couple times this season in our favor.
6. Danny Coale should be on the short list of the greatest Hokies ever to lace up his cleats. He might be the 2nd or 3rd best receiver on our offense, but he has proven he is the best “football player”on our team. That guy is a leader, leaves it on the field, and is forever a Hokie captain. We will never see another like him again. NFL teams need to take a hard look at his intangibles. He will be the steal of the draft, if he even gets drafted.
7. Logan Thomas was BY FAR the best QB on the field last night. Earlier I compared Robinson to Armanti Edwards, while others compared him to Tyrod. He might be a poor man’s Armanti, but he could not hold Tyrod’s jock strap. For Michigan to get to another level, they need to make him a receiver next year and start coaching up a QB. Robinson may run fast, but he couldn’t throw it in the ocean standing in a boat.
8. Michigan is a sound, well coached football team with a great history and fan base (I enjoyed meeting many of them this week). Congratulations to them on the Sugar Bowl. Many people will complain about officiating, luck, whatever, but Michigan hung in that game, and did what they needed to do to win. Hats off to them. We enjoyed it.
One thing I forgot to mention. #9 on the list
Justin, you played one Hell of a game. Don’t ever look back and think for one second your kick in overtime mattered. You showed us all the heart that makes us proud to be Hokies. Way to go son. We will never forget it.
Agreed
1- VT does win any other day…by far the better team…faster..but Michigan was bigger on the Dline and shut down the interior running game (but got no pass rush).
2- They did care and played their butts off..too bad the coach cost them all their hard work
3- That WAS a catch…everyone else has said it was a catch…awful call
4- Awful…awful, awful
5- True…but I knew what was going on…while it remained one score early, I knew one lucky play would change the game
6-Coale is great. Future New England Patriot….I wouldn’t be shocked at all to see him in NE
7- LT is awesome. I just hope he plays 2 more years. He’s one of the best prototypical QB’s I have seen in college so early…I can’t imagine how good he’ll be in 2 yrs. And NO….Denard cannot carry Tyrod’s jock..and he would not be as great in the ACC, SEC, or Big 12….too much speed in those conferences….I said it before the game, he didn’t look so fast last night
8-Beamer hung Michigan in the game…but credit their defense for keeping us out of the endzone (though much of the credit goes to our conservative play calling in the redzone. Sorry VT fans..Stinespring was NEVER the problem….playcalling reached an all time low this year).
I agree with many of the comments.
I don’t EVER blame refs, are complain about refs….because it usually evens out.
BUT,…..
1- That was not a ROUGHING the Punter….that was running in to….he barely got touched
2- The Kicker for Michigan false started 3 times….twice on fg’s (including the game winner….moving forward before the snap is illegal, I noticed it every time in real time, how come the paid refs missed it 3 times?)…and on the fake fg he did the same
3-That was a catch….100%. There is no way you had evidence to OVERTURN the call. That must be conclusive to overturn….The two commentators, all ESPN analysts, and the MICHIGAN COACH all said it was a catch.
That being said..I don’t hate on Beamer (while everyone I am friends with does…and calls him Big Game Beamer because he makes stupid mistakes in Big Games)….but I am the biggest critic from this game:
1- Kick the fg to get a 9 pt lead
2- No need to go for a punt block when Michigan has 60 yds of offense….set up a return, you are dominating…you are getting great field position…every time we go for a block we run in to the kicker…make the smart play
3-Stop being so conservative in the red zone…Michigan couldn’t stop our passing game, yet we continually changed the game plan in the red zone
4-The Fake Punt?? After a timeout? With 1 yd to go?? When Michigan can’t move the ball?? When you have a huge QB?? Run it 15 yds instead of 1?? Awful….Awful…Awful
FINALLY!
I’ve been scouring the internet looking for someone bringing up those false starts by the Michigan kicker. If I was a VT fan I would be up in arms. It was so obvious, yet no one even reacted?? The broadcast crew calls it a ‘stutter step’? Yes fellas, a stutter step before the snap is a 5 yard penalty. I don’t get it.
I thought maybe (MAYBE) he was reacting to the snap and the stutter was after the actual snap itself, and no one else on offense or defense was reacting yet, but clearly on the game winner, when they showed the slow mo replay from behind, you can see the kicker flinch BEFORE the ball is snapped.
Again, I don’t see how this is not everywhere today. I’m pissed and I don’t even care about these teams.
p.s. That was a catch at the end too. It’s a shame that a ref that (clearly, with multiple examples) doesn’t understand the rules of the game turns a kid who should be a hero, with a sportscenter No. 1 top play, into an afterthought. The stupid espn cameramen even kept zooming in on his face at the end when Michigan was winnng it, like he had just fumbled the game away or something. So pathetic.
Again, you all deserve to be angry. Good luck in the future.
Ghost of Sugar Bowl Past
Did we not learn from the National Championship in New Orleans vs. FSU?? Take the points in the first half. When we went for that 4th down (in roughly the same exact spot that we did against FSU (just different hash mark)…I felt like it was Deja Vu. Those points on a chip shot fg would have been enough to win the game. I know hindsight is 20-20….but we had hindsight in this scenario, and did the same mistake twice. Getting a 2 score lead is huge
Shafted By BubbaChuck
I’m no Hokies fan, but had to pop on here to give your team your fair shake…
You deserved the win ………its that simple.
Yes, some bad play calls but the officiating was awful.
For example,
Pass Interference on your CB when he intercepted it….both players were using their hands.
The reversal of an Interception which looked awfully close to a catch
The reversal of a catch ruled a TD on the field where every tv angle could NOT give you 100% reason to over-rule the call on the field
Off-sides by the Kicker.
Throw in some really unlucky plays
Running into the Kicker
Michigan’s first TD and how on earth didn’t the safety intercept that ball.
MIchigan’s miracle pass completion on that FG attempt flub at the end of the first half
Michigan’s 2nd TD and miracle throw by that crappy QB
Throw in some bad decisions
QB Sneak on a play that is a good yard and half for a first down
Fake Punt on 4th and 1 …..Why ?
W/ that said ………..You still TOOK THE LEAD IN OT….And were done in b/c You are Virginia Tech, they are the Big Blue and the downside to our fine country —> Money talks and Big Blue winning is much bigger to the NCAA then the Hokies wining.. very sad
All and All……..shocking game……..you dominated……….yes, u made a few bad mistakes, but you deserved the win…..And for that replay booth to over-rule a catch on the field that was deemed a TD w/o 100% clear evidence……….Cue the Conspiracy theory.
That fake
I think
I think that’s what makes this loss so tough to take. Take any one of about 10 unlucky bounces, plays, calls, etc and have them swing VT’s way and we win. That simple.
If it takes conclusive evidence to “confirm” a call on the field, then it takes conclusive evidence to over-rule a call. Sports blogs, VT blogs, michigan blogs, announcers, etc all are on the fence on this call (mostly leaning towards “TD”) yet somehow the booth found conclusive proof to over-turn the on-field call.
Definitely makes the loss tougher to swallow.
I agree with everyone pretty much, that fake punt call was one of the worst plays I have ever seen. I can’t believe what Wilson did either when VT had it at Michigan’s 4 yard line and he back tracked 25 yards. One thing that great running backs do is they try and go backwards reverse the field and try and make something out of nothing, very rarely is that successful. I thought Wilson new better than that, but oh well, he had a great year and I still love the guy. I just hope he stays at tech another year and doesn’t declare for the NFL draft.
