Hokies Pick Up Commit From 4-Star DE Wyatt Teller

Early this afternoon, Liberty High School defensive lineman Wyatt Teller committed to Virginia Tech over at least 16 other confirmed FBS offers. The Hokies, long felt to be an underdog to in-state rivals Virginia for Wyatt's services, made a late push that ended up landing Teller, one of the nation's top defensive linemen.

Teller was ranked as a four-star prospect by all four of the major recruiting services. Rivals ranked him the #75 player nationally, the #7 strongside defensive end and the #6 player in Virginia. 247 Sports ranked him as the #144 player nationally, the #9 strong-side defensive end and the #10 player in the state. Scout and ESPN ranked him lower at his position (the #31 and #32 respectively), but both services listed Teller as a defensive tackle.

I talked to Wyatt in the spring and he said that most schools were recruiting him as a defensive end, though a few had discussed the possibility of moving him inside because of his lack of foot speed. Despite reports that Teller was also being recruited by some teams as an offensive lineman or a wing/h-back, it appears Teller's future is on the defensive line. I will upload the video of Wyatt from the Spring Game as soon as possible.

Teller announced yesterday his intent to make his decision today, after months of speculation that his recruiting was nearing an end. Despite being ranked highly, Teller is the anti-big recruit. He announced that he did not care about getting some of the big "name" teams to offer him simply for the purpose of telling people he was offered by them or to bloat his offer list. He said that he cared more about offers from the teams that he had grown up watching and rooting for (presumably UVA and Virginia Tech).

Teller is the Hokies first defensive line commit of the 2013, and fills a big hole as Tech is not pursuing many quality defensive linemen that remain uncommitted. His commitment brings the Hokies to 17 total commitments for the 2013 class (near full), and almost every need has now been met. Teller's commitment moves the Hokies up to the No. 14 and No. 16 classes in the nation respectively by 247 Sports and ESPN. Rivals and Scout have yet to update their rankings to include Teller's commitment to the Hokies.

Below are two videos of Teller's highlight tape. I will analyze him as a prospect along with the other prospects in my future recruiting guide posts.
