After leading the undefeated Hokies to their first ever road win against a ranked team, Junior, Outside Hitter, Amanda McKinzie of East Leroy, Mich., was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week. The Hokies' sweep at the Spartan Invitational was also persuasive enough to get the women votes to be in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Poll (they did not rank in the poll, but did receive 17 votes) for the first time in program history.
McKinzie led the Hokies to a 3-0 record at the Spartan Invitational where they had an exceptional defeat of 3-1 over No. 19 Michigan State. This was the first time in program history that the Hokies have defeated a ranked opponent while on the road.
McKinzie finished the Spartan Invitational with 48 kills and 4.00 kills per set average. She also record 33 digs and four service aces.
The Hokies are back in action this weekend at the Indiana Invitational and will face Indiana on Friday and Northern Arizona and Bowling Green on Saturday.
Congrats to ACC Player of the Week Amanda McKinzie! McKinzie is the Hokies' first POW since Victoria Hamsher in 2013. pic.twitter.com/h6ccUWQNas
