Former Virginia Tech Golfer Tied for US Open Lead After First Round

Photo

Former Hokie golfer Brendon de Jonge used an eagle three on the 14th hole to shoot two under par in the first round of the US Open Thursday at Pebble Beach. He is in a three-way tie for the lead with 2003 PGA champion Shaun Micheel and England's Paul Casey.

The Zimbabwe native was an All-American at Virginia Tech in 2002 with fellow PGA pro Johnson Wagner and again in 2003. He is one of two Tech golfers to make the All-America team twice with Tim Collins being the other in 1965 and 1967.

De Jong had the lead to himself after nine holes at three-under. However, he made bogey on three of the first four holes on the back nine to return to even par prior to the eagle on 14. He made an eagle, four birdies and four bogeys during his round.

His group is scheduled to tee off at 10:55 EDT Friday. He is paired with Bob Estes and Brian Davis.
