Hey everyone, If you're as excited as me for NCAA 13 and don't want to name the players on the Hokies yourself (or don't feel like waiting for named rosters yourself) you can download the teambuilder team I created. There were a few freshmen who I didn't know who to choose between, Nick Dew is still on the team and EA Teambuilder has a filter that doesn't allow Gayle, Wang, or Van DYke, so those names had to be spelled wrong intentionally. Open to any other suggestions-feel free to leave comments!
Dorian Finney-Smith, per a little birdie, is a Gator. Florida killed the transfer market this off season
— Dave Telep (@DaveTelep) June 14, 2012
Finney-Smith averaged 6.3 ppg. (5th for the Hokies) and led the team in rebounding at 7 rpg. as a true freshman. Finney-Smith selected the Hokies over Florida and Old Dominion, making him the highest ranked recruit the Hokies have ever landed (in the recruiting site era) at #31 overall. Finney-Smith decided to transfer at the end of the season and announced his intentions after the firing of Seth Greenberg. Many thought he would transfer to ODU considering his brother was a starter there, the coach that recruited him to Virginia Tech (John Richardson) returned to ODU and because he is from Portsmouth. However, his mother announced early on the Monarchs were not in contention. It is believed Finney-Smith's motivation was to play at a bigger and more prestigious school on the college basketball landscape. There were also prevalent rumors that Dorian did not fit in at Virginia Tech and felt uncomfortable there. More on this developing story as it evolves here on Gobbler Country.
Interesting piece from ESPN today on the struggles facing James Johnson at Virginia Tech. Though it also seems to take a narrow view. Obviously VPI will have a hard time stacking up to UNC and Duke. But why not draw comparisons to Miami, Wake or BC of late? Andy Katz evens jumps the gun on Virginia -- seemingly sold on their improvement, with just one year of reference.
Virginia Tech released a statement that they have filled their final men's basketball vacancy; Director of Men's Basketball Operations, with the hiring of Eastern Michigan's Andy Moore. Moore has spent 12 years as a college assistant (EMU, BGSU, Michigan and California University of Pennsylvania) and 4 years as either Director of Basketball Operations or in Game Operations. Per the press release, Virginia Tech head men’s basketball coach James Johnson said, "I’m very excited to have Andy Moore join our staff. He is an individual that has a wide range of skills and experience in college basketball. He has worked as an assistant coach at all levels, including time as an assistant coach in the Big Ten and also has worked in all areas of operations. He is a great addition to our staff." Stay tuned to Gobbler Country for a review and grades of the new staff, including Moore.
The Virginia Tech Hokies scored their second commitment of the 2014 class today in Hampton Crabber RB Marshawn Williams. As you'll see in the highlight video I linked, Williams is not the most fleet of foot, but he is hard to bring down a la Darren Evans. Williams was said to have never considered anyone else and that playing for the Hokies was a dream.
Miami's Category 6 blog site recently reached out to blogs affiliated with teams on their schedule to provide them with an outlook for the 2012 version of their teams. Here is my interview for Category 6, discussing Tech's strengths, weaknesses, potential breakthrough players, a season prediction and a VT-Miami prediction. Enjoy.

Suspended Virginia Tech kicker Cody Journell has come to an agreement with the Commonwealth Attorney to plead guilty to a lesser charge than the felony breaking and entering he has been charged with. It appears he will plead guilty to a trespassing misdemeanor instead. The terms appear to involve no jail time or fine, but will require 100 hours of community service. Journell tweeted Friday night, "First good news I’ve heard in 6 months…I’m so determined to make a mike vick comeback, man I love #VT." His status with the football team is still up in the air, but as Andy Bitter said of the deal in his post, "potentially opening up the possibility for him to return to the Hokies." More on this story as it develops. Stay glued to Gobbler Country. UPDATE: According to our own Josh Parcell, Journell also posted to Facebook "…sounds like ill be back playing ball with my boys in less than a week, man I love VT for all their support." So it looks like he's coming back.
