Virginia Tech vs. James Madison
Time: 1:30 p.m. EDT
Date: Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010
Place: Lane Stadium/Worsham Field (66,233), Blacksburg, Va.
TV: None (ESPN3.com)
James Madison: The Dukes are 1-0 after opening their season with a 48-7 win over Morehead State out of the Pioneer League ... JMU will be without back-up QB Justin Thorpe, who hyperextended his left knee in the first half of Saturday's game ... Thorpe, a sophomore, was last year's CAA rookie of the year after taking after starter Drew Dudzik suffered a fractured foot in the team's fifth game of 2009 ... the more athletic Thorpe was expected to split time with Dudzik this season ... against Morehead, the Dukes ran the ball 61 times and only threw it 15 times as they dominated time of possession in the first half ... they averaged 4.8 yards per carry and 12.6 yards per pass attempt against the Eagles ... last year, JMU lost to Maryland in overtime, 38-35.
Trends: James Madison has lost to an ACC opponent each of the last three seasons (2009 vs. Maryland, 2008 vs. Duke, 2007 vs. UNC) ... the Hokies have won 14 consecutive home openers ... their last loss in a home opener was in 1995 when they opened the season with a 20-14 loss to BC ... Virginia Tech has won 13 of its last 14 home games ... the Hokies have won 32 consecutive non-conference home games dating back to a 36-32 loss to UVa in 1998.
Boise State 33, Virginia Tech 30: What They're Saying
A collection of links and quotes on the Hokies' loss to Boise State.
Face the Nation
Boise State Vs. Virginia Tech: Five Easy Pieces (SB Nation)
"Virginia Tech joins the ranks of teams that scheduled large in a week when most could have backed off and played a patsy (say Rice, San Jose State, and Miami of Ohio, for instance.) Remember them fondly and specifically in your voting down the road, especially if this is their only loss. Bravery goes both ways, and VT showed plenty in both scheduling the game and in the way they played in it. Remember this in December, however, is something few may do."
The Broncos are who we thought they were (Dr Saturday)
"There will also be a not-so-sudden abundance of haters spinning Monday night's win as a fluke, or questioning the value of beating the dominant program in the ACC over the last six years in its own backyard, or belittling Boise's hypothetical prospects against a schedule full of Pac-10 or SEC heavies in some nonexistent fantasy world where that might be possible. This is small and petty."
Roadblock No. 1 Passed, Survived (Pre-Snap Read)
"I don’t mean to downplay Virginia Tech by focusing on the Broncos, but Tech’s time will come during A.C.C. play. I think nothing less of the Hokies after the loss, and believe we’ll see from this year’s team the same we’ve seen from most of Frank Beamer’s recent clubs: consistent improvement throughout the season. I still believe the Hokies the class of the Coastal division, if that means anything."

Boise State 33, Virginia Tech 30: Morning After Stream of Consciousness
First of all, thanks to Mark for actually mustering up the courage to write a post last night. I just shut it down and watched Hoarders. Also, a huge thank you to Sir Patrick in Florida for making me feel better about myself. I may take Virginia Tech football too seriously, but at least it's not dolls.
Random Things:
- At some point today, one of my friends is going to get punched in the throat. Sometimes it's just gotta happen. A good throat punch always makes friendships stronger.
- On the unis: The helmets looked sweet, but the numbers didn't work for me. The circuitry fade-pattern looked fine on the pants and shoulder stripes, but didn't look good on the numbers and made them hard to read at times. The visibility of the numbers were my biggest complaint.
- Stop scheduling non-cupcakes for the opener. Just quit doing it.
- This season is far from over. While the national title is out of reach, the conference title isn't as long as we improve. However, if the players feel like the season's over we're going to lose three or four more games. It's up to the coaches to keep that from happening.
- Let's see. In the first quarter we had a botched snap, had a punt blocked, had a kickoff go out of bounds, made some inexcusable mental errors in special teams and made life pretty easy for Kellen Moore. A whole lot of that boils down to coaching and having your team ready to play. And I'm convinced there is no coach in this country better at having his team ready to go than Chris Petersen. Every time I watch Boise State, they are prepared for everything that's thrown at them.
- That said, I have a feeling we're going to play like garbage against James Madison.
- I really wish OBNUG would just send over their post for the blog bet so I can start posting about the Dukes.
Boise State 33, Virginia Tech 30: Same Story, Reruns of Depression
At this point, I don't know that there are words to describe it. We, as Hokie fans have been here before. We've seen the team bounce back and have successful season after successful season. All of the heart-wrenching defeats seem to be pushed aside for bigger and better things eventually. A loss like the one endured on Monday night brings us all back to square one. It brings back the pain, and in doing so, effectively washes away most of the optimism.

Boise State 33, Virginia Tech 30: Postgame Stream of Conciousness
Can't do it tonight. Sorry, guys. Will try tomorrow. Remember, guys. It's much more important to be a Hokie after a loss than after a win.
How Virginia Tech's Opponents Fared in Week 1
Remember last year when I did just a massive collection of links to posts about the week's best games? I'm not surprised you don't because no one read it and it was really just a colossal waste of my time. This year I'm going to try putting a different spin on it by just going over the games played by Tech's Soon to be Vanquished Foes.
I'll also add my own perspective on the games and what they mean for Tech in the future. Hopefully you'll think its more relevant and it'll actually be something you'll be willing to read. It's something that could be tweaked as the year goes on, so please leave any feedback you have (positive or negative) and I'll toy with this feature as need be.
[Ed. Note: After writing this, I realize that this little feature is going to be the bane of my existence all season long. FML.]
Bourbon Shots: Hokies vs. Boise State Edition
Links and links and links, most of them previews of Monday's game:
The National View
Week 1 College Football Buffet (SB Nation)
Sean Keeley of TNIAAM previews the weekend in college football and ranks the Hokies and Broncos at the top of his viewing list. Go here for times and TV listings as well as pertinent reading for every game worth viewing.
VT, BSU Meet In Top 10 Battle At Fedex Field (SB Nation DC)
SB Nation DC has the StoryStream for Monday's game, which will be updated as news breaks surrounding it. It looks like we're getting closer and closer to a sellout for the game, which would benefit the Hokies. Be loud, guys.
Seventh Day Adventure: It Begins (Football Outsiders)
The guys at FO crunch the numbers and pick the Hokies to come out on top Monday. Both defenses were great in passing situations last year, meaning the key for both offenses will be getting positive yards on first down and staying out of long-yardage situations. Bonus: OBNUG and I on the FO podcast.
The Fearless Friday Forecast (Mr. College Football)
Tony Barnhart picks us to beat Boise State by a point.
Eve of the season ACC primer: Virginia Tech (D1scourse)
Patrick believes despite their flaws, the Hokies do have a chance at the national title because every other team is flawed as well. However, he thinks in the end we'll live up to expectations: "The national consensus is the Hokies are a borderline top-10 team. Virginia Tech --- whether as a function of impressive consistency or boring predictability --- can be counted upon to land in that neighborhood."
The Rise Of Virginia Tech And Boise State (Lost Lettermen)
LL looks at the similarities, differences and the men behind the rise of both Virginia Tech and Boise State from the dregs of college football to their current standing.
2010 Virginia Tech Football: What to Watch vs. Boise State
The Team
- In the last two season openers, the Hokies came out flat and relied on their defense to stay in the game. I don't think they can afford to do that this year because of the explosive nature of Boise State's offense. The Tech offense needs to be effective from the start.
- It's the first game of the season, so there's going to be a lot of little mistakes on both sides. You'll see illegal formations, illegal substitutions and false starts. It'll be interesting to see how having 10 returning starters on both sides of the ball will help Boise State avoid these problems. The team that doesn't let penalties like this derail drives will have the upper hand.
- Field position will be key early on. The Hokies have a new punter, but their return game was solid last year on both punts and kickoffs. They also have Justin Myer back as the kickoff specialist and he is pretty consistent at getting the ball into the end zone.
- I don't think the heat and humidity will effect Boise State. Hopefully, the crowd noise will. I expect there to be a lot of Hokie fans in Landover and I expect them to be loud.

Talking Virginia Tech's New Pro Combat Uniforms with Nike Marketing
[For the sake of full disclosure, Nike paid my way New York to cover Wednesday's unveiling of the new Pro Combat uniforms. While I am under no obligation to put the new uniforms in a positive light, the opportunity to cover the event would not have happened if not for Nike's generosity.]

One of the opportunities the trip to New York afforded me was to talk to a Nike representative about the Hokies new uniforms, how they came about and ask them to answer the critics of the all-black look. Nike marketing director Leroy Ebanks was kind enough to answer all of these question on behalf of Nike and, to his credit, didn't even blink when I asked him about black not being in the Hokies' color palette.
