Tech gets past Norfolk State behind big day from Jarell Eddie
Jarell Eddie says the three pointer is his shot and he sure showed that off on Sunday.
The sophomore forward hit five of six three pointers while scoring 24 points as the Hokies defeated in-state opponent Norfolk State 73-60 on Sunday afternoon. The win came in front of a less than astonishing crowd at Cassell Coliseum but it was the team's second straight victory and improved their record to 7-3 overall on the season.
Norfolk State has had a season similar to the Hokies with an up and down ride that included a close loss to Big East opponent Marquette. On Sunday, the Spartans played the entire game with the confidence that they could defeat Tech and had every intention of doing so.
Virginia Tech (6-3) vs. Norfolk State (6-3) Basketball Preview
In the first ever meeting between the two schools, Virginia Tech will play host to in-state school Norfolk State on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. The Hokies are coming off a 78-67 win over Rhode Island in which they snapped a two game losing streak. Junior guard Erick Green led the way for the team with 24 points off the bench while forward Jarell Eddie added 15. The Hokies continue to look for improved play from it's two seniors in Victor Davila and Dorenzo Hudson as both have struggled recently and caused trouble for Seth Greenberg's squad.
Green's Presence Key to Hokies Success
They never said it’d be easy.
Virginia Tech basketball faces the tall task of replacing Malcolm Delaney, Jeff Allen, and Terrell Bell in their lineup this season. The dynamic trio averaged 39 points and 18.8 assists per game in 2010-2011.
This season, however, Erick Green is the leader of this team and will look to carry the load for a very young Hokies squad. The junior guard from Winchester stepped into the starting lineup last season after Dorenzo Hudson went down with a season ending foot injury.
Green flourished in his new role as he had a breakout season at the point guard position. He averaged 11.6 points per game and was third in the ACC with 1.8 steals per game. Another key stat that often goes unnoticed about Green’s season is that he was third in the conference in assist to turnover ratio as well with just 2.3.
Virginia Tech's NIT Season Tip-Off Bracket Announced
Virginia Tech received its road to Madison Square Garden Wednesday as the bracket for the 2011 NIT Season Tip-Off was released (H/T SBN Bay Area for the bracket linked below). The Hokies will host the first and second rounds of the tournament at Cassell Coliseum Nov. 14-16.
Tech will square off with Monmouth from the Northeast Conference in the first round. The winner will play either Paul Hewitt-led George Mason or Isaiah Thomas-led Florida International. The winner of that second round game will advance to New York for the NIT semifinals.

Report: Brad Greenberg Resigns as Radford Basketball Coach
From the Richmond Times-Dispatch:
RADFORD, VA -- Radford University men's basketball coach Brad Greenberg has resigned according to RU officials in a posting on the school's official university athletics sight (sic). The move comes following RU suspending Greenberg for four games this past season, for violating NCAA rules.
Brad Greenberg was an assistant under his brother, Seth, at Virginia Tech from 2003-2007 and was a key factor in the Hokies' resurgence that culminated in a trip to the 2007 NCAA Tournament. He took the Radford job after the 2006-07 season and led the Highlanders to the 2009 NCAA Tournament.
Virginia Tech Draws Minnesota in 2011 ACC/Big Ten Challenge
The schedule for the 2011 ACC/Big Ten challenge was released today and Virginia Tech will be on the road against Minnesota Wednesday, Nov. 30. The Hokies will try to help the ACC reassert its dominance after dropping the last two challenges. The league won the first 10.
The big difference this year is the opportunity for the leagues to split the challenge. The Big Ten has added Nebraska, giving each league 12 teams and the challenge a 12-game slate for the first time in its history. The Huskers won't get the toughest of initiations into the challenge as they host Wake Forest.
The full schedule (and some picks for the fun of it) is after the jump.
Virginia Tech G/F Manny Atkins to Transfer
Atkins' offensive contributions would have presumably increased next season, as he was projected to at least contend for a starting spot.
He was one of only two small forwards on the team's roster last year, along with Eddie, and would have been one of only five players returning next season who had played in more than nine games in 2010.
UPDATED: Virginia Tech Basketball Coach Seth Greenberg Reportedly Being Sued
UPDATE (4/13 - 8:30 AM) - The News-Leader has updated its story. The padding and wall distance at War Memorial didn't meet several standards. Here's the money quote from the family's attorney:
Yost said he filed the lawsuit because of Virginia Tech's lack of movement. "We were hoping they would settle," he said. "They haven't negotiated with me at all."

From the Staunton News-Leader:
CHRISTIANSBURG - The father of a Wilson Memorial High School basketball player is suing Virginia Tech Coach Seth Greenberg for $2.5 million amid claims his son suffered brain injuries nearly two years ago at a basketball camp at the school, according to a lawsuit filed in Montgomery County Circuit Court.
The suit claims the young man hit his head on an uncovered wall less than three feet from the baseline at War Memorial Gym when he slid for a loose ball. There aren't many more details other than that, including what the extent of his injuries are.
