2011 Virginia Tech Top 10: No. 3 - Wresting Finishes 2nd at National Duals
Over the next few weeks we'll count down the Top 10 moments in Virginia Tech sports in the 2010-11 sports season. Only one moment per sport is eligible for the countdown, otherwise this would just be seven or eight football moments and then it might as well have just been the football Top 10 and done in January. And since I was too lazy to do that and there isn't anything going on during the summer we're doing this. Hope you enjoy.
No. 4 - Men's Track and Field Finishes Fifth
No. 5 - Women's Soccer Beats B2B Top 10 Teams
No. 6 - Volleyball Makes 1st NCAA Tournament
No. 7 - Baseball's Rash Leads ACC in Homers
No. 8 - Women's Lacrosse Holds on for Upset
No. 9 - Men's Tennis Beats No. 20 Louisville
No. 10 - Softball Wins at Florida State
At this point, the story of the Virginia Tech wrestling program's phoenix-like rise has been well-documented. After the 2005-06 season, head coach Tom Brands left for Iowa and took with him the bulk of a recruiting class that was supposed to help the Hokies become a powerhouse in the sport. Instead, the administration was left with the remnants of a program in disarray and contemplated ending the program.
Enter Kevin Dressler.
Virginia Tech Wrestling Beats Lehigh, Gets Another Feather in Its Cap
After a humbling road trip last week, the No. 6 Virginia Tech wrestling team dominated No. 12 Lehigh Friday at Cassell Coliseum. The Hokies jumped out to a 24-0 lead after the first six matches and went on to win 23-15.
That's not a typo. The Hokies lost a point between the seventh and eighth matches for unsportsmanlike conduct. John Dickson, wrestling at 184 pounds for the Hokies, wasn't present for the start of his match and after a long delay finally ran into the arena and quickly changed into his singlet. Tech lost a point due to his tardiness.
That episode is more comical than it would have been had the dual been a tight one. Instead, it occurred with the Hokies ahead 24-6 because their best wrestlers were at their best.
It's Time to be Excited About Virginia Tech Wrestling
Virginia Tech and head coach Kevin Dresser have a lot to be proud of after the Hokies finished second at the NWCA National Duals tournament in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
The No. 12 Hokies fell to No. 1 Cornell 25-10 in the finals, but went on an impressive run to get there. They knocked off No. 17 Central Michigan, No. 2 Oklahoma State and No. 4 Wisconsin to reach the finals. Jesse Dong was outstanding for Tech at 157 pounds, going 4-0 with two pins.
The loss to Cornell broke a string of seven consecutive dual wins for the Hokies and the win over Wisconsin avenged one of their two previous losses. They are now 11-3 this season and look strong going into ACC play.
This rise of Tech's program and the job Dresser has done is something Hokie fans should be proud of. If you get the chance, go out and support the Hokies, who will return to Cassell Coliseum Jan. 16 against Clarion.
