Around SBN: Miikka Kiprusoff Wins 300th Game, Buffalo Crushes Boston

Chris Colston, writer of the Hokie Annual, has provided the decision announcement times of the Hokies big three remaining prospects via Twitter. According to the tweet, "Kirven, Caleb and Ekanem will all announce Wed at 8 a.m., 8:30 and 9 am respectively." Keep checking back with us on Gobbler Country for more recruiting analysis on Feb. 1, National Signing Day.

Ekanem is a LB/DE prospect for the 2012 class. He is ranked the #209 in the nation according to Rivals.com. He was down to his final two, Virginia Tech and Notre Dame. Though he was said to be favoring Tech, this is HUGE news as it now seems we are the only remaining team in play for his services. Keep connected to Gobbler Country for more recruiting and National Signing Day coverage.

Virginia Tech Recruiting Guide for the class of 2012

Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas (3) waves to fans as he walks off the field following a 23-20 loss to Michigan in the Sugar Bowl NCAA college football game in New Orleans, Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012. (AP Photo/Bill Haber)

So I'm guessing most of you thought I was completely done doing these articles altogether. If you will remember I did this in a five part series a year ago and I started that series on June 18, 2010. But, as I worked in baseball for the first part of the recruiting process for this class, often logging 100+ hour work weeks, it was impossible to devote the time needed to this type of series. Additionally I had some thoughts about how I could better these posts instead of just spewing out 2,500-3,500 words on five players. So for this season at least, you're only getting one recruiting guide and extensive coverage on signing day (AND YOU'LL LIKE IT!). If you would like to call my boss, however, and try to convince him to give me enough time off to do next year's recruiting guides with regularity, feel free to ask me for his number. For everything recruiting 2012 and a primer for National Signing Day, read like a kid trying to meet their Accelerated Reader quota.

New ACC Football Divisions Could be Decided Next Week

Photo

From the one and only David Teel of the Newport News Daily Press:

First, a glance forward to next week's ACC winter meetings in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

In between poolside margaritas - on the rocks, with salt, barkeep! - league and school officials could well finalize football divisions for the 14-team alignment created by the addition of Syracuse and Pittsburgh.

As Teel states, and has been said all long by ACC big wigs, Cuse and Pitt are just going to be plugged into the current six-team divisions. Teel does a good job of going over the pros and cons of having either in the Coastal and while he said Pitt, which is closer in proximity to Virginia Tech and UVa, should be the preferred Coastal team, I'd rather see Cuse.

Yes, Syracuse is a longer road trip than Pitt, but it's one we were used to making for over a decade as a member of the Big East. Plus, it would likely mean the Hokies' new permanent Atlantic game would be switched from Boston College to Pitt.

Currently, the Hokies are the only team in the ACC that has to play at Boston College and at Miami (the league's North and South Pole) in the same season consistently, which they do every even-numbered year. The difference between Syracuse and Boston is about 140 miles one way.

What's your preference for which team gets placed in the Coastal?

Virginia Tech Vs. BYU Preview With Vanquish The Foe

This Wednesday at 7 p.m. the Hokies host BYU in a long-awaited non-conference game that will conclude Tech's non-conference slate this season. For this occasion, we have a first this season as Brett Hein, Managing Editor of BYU's SB Nation site Vanquish The Foe has joined us to give a preview of the Cougars. This is a really great opportunity for both sites since it's an unconventional non-conference game as fans of both teams probably don't get to see very much of the other because of time zones and regional networks. You can also read MY answers to Brett's questions here. For the preview, prove all your English teachers wrong and keep reading.

Hokies Gobble Up Hoos And Execute Payback For Last Year's Sweep

"Why yes Erick, I thought you'd NEVER ask!"

Despite a game that looked like two opposing groupings of cavemen learning to play basketball with a boulder (yeah, it took basketball back to the Neanderthal era), the Hokies pulled out a gritty 47-45 win over the hated 'Hoos in a sold out and raucous* (see bottom of story for key) John Paul Jones Arena Sunday night. For a quick recap and celebration after the jump, hit the button! JUST DO IT ALREADY!

Hokies Win First Half Against Heels, Lose Second Half By More

While it was another L in the books for the Hokies, who are free-falling after four straight losses (all ACC), we saw some positive things out of the team tonight (almost all of them were in the first half). For those of us who are being realistic, UNC put a much better team on the court tonight, and so getting much more than what we got out of what we had out there tonight is wishful thinking. For more thoughts on this one and on where the Hokies stand venture onward past the jump.
