Finney-Smith averaged 6.3 ppg. (5th for the Hokies) and led the team in rebounding at 7 rpg. as a true freshman. Finney-Smith selected the Hokies over Florida and Old Dominion, making him the highest ranked recruit the Hokies have ever landed (in the recruiting site era) at #31 overall.
Finney-Smith decided to transfer at the end of the season and announced his intentions after the firing of Seth Greenberg. Many thought he would transfer to ODU considering his brother was a starter there, the coach that recruited him to Virginia Tech (John Richardson) returned to ODU and because he is from Portsmouth. However, his mother announced early on the Monarchs were not in contention.
It is believed Finney-Smith's motivation was to play at a bigger and more prestigious school on the college basketball landscape. There were also prevalent rumors that Dorian did not fit in at Virginia Tech and felt uncomfortable there.
