Why yes, this post will include the "preseason hype makes me nervous tag," why do you ask?
In this week's edition of the D1scast, Patrick Stevens from D1scourse.com and WNST's Glenn Clark discuss happenings at ACC media days and the Hokies' opener with Boise State. The VT-Boise talk beings at around the 11-minute mark.
For it to come true, the Hokies would have to win their third ACC title in four years and the Panthers would have to win the Big East for the first time under Dave Wannstedt.
I think No. 10 is just about right for where we should be going into the season.
Matt Hayes of the Sporting News includes Virginia Tech over Boise State among three non-conference upsets to watch this season. His other two upsets also include ACC teams: Miami over Ohio State and Rutgers over North Carolina.
Add this one to post-spring rankings from ESPN's Mark Schlabach, SI's Andy Staples and Tony Barnhart. CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd has Virginia Tech at No. 11. Notables: No. 2 Boise State, No. 13 Georgia Tech, No. 14 Miami, No. 16 Florida State and No. 24 North Carolina. HT: Annette.
Of note: 2. Boise State, 12. Miami, 15. Georgia Tech, 18. North Carolina, 22. Florida State.
Hokies come in at No. 5, behind Alabama, Boise State, Ohio State and Texas.
Virginia Tech will open the season as the No. 7 team in the country according to the preseason USA Today Coaches' Poll. Its opponent in the opener, Alabama, is ranked No. 5 in the poll. Other ACC teams in the poll include Georgia Tech at No. 15, Florida State at No. 19 and North Carolina at No. 20.
Virginia Tech was picked to win its fourth ACC title by 69 (heh, heh, 69) of the 87 media members who voted at this year's ACC Football Kickoff. Voters picked VT in the Coastal and FSU in the Atlantic. Georgia Tech running back Jonathan Dwyer was selected as the ACC's preseason player of the year. None of these results are very surprising.
