Looks like Duan Perez-Means and Zack McCray are going to redshirt. That means James Gayle and J.R. Collins are the back-ups at d-end
Jimmy Robertson of Inside Hokie Sports believes the Hokies are going to redshirt freshman defensive ends Duan Perez-Means and Zack McCray, opening up spots in the depth chart for freshmen James Gayle and J.R. Collins, who both redshirted last year.
It's not surprising that Perez-Means would take a redshirt year since he's still recovering from an injured shoulder. But McCray is a guy that the coaches felt had really excelled in practice and could have seen the field. And, as Robertson goes on to say, Gayle has been limited in practice by a hamstring injury.
Most likely, the Hokies will go into their first game against Boise State with three defensive ends who are at 100 percent. That puts even more pressure on senior Steven Friday to be the guy who can get to the quarterback.
