Like many of you probably do, I check every NFL boxscore that has a former Hokie playing in it. If you do this, you know it takes a long, long time to do and sometimes you miss a player or two.
Throughout the upcoming NFL season, you'll have all of those Hokies and their performances in one central location here on Gobbler Country. In addition, we'll have a poll at the end for the Hokie with the best week in the NFL.
Follow the jump for the first installment of the season-long series.
For my own sanity, this is going to be an alphabetical list (by last name). Also, since the big uglies on the offensive line don't really get any stats, we're just going to skip them. Sorry. If you notice that I've missed anyone, please leave a comment.
Xavier Adibi-LB, Houston Texans: Under the dim lights of Monday Night (Preseason) Football, Adibi tallied three tackles and sacked Mark Sanchez and Greg McElroy of the Jets, each for a loss of 5 yards. Adibi also played a passing play well and tackled Bilal Powell for a loss of 3 yards. Adibi played well into the 2nd quarter.
James Anderson-LB, Carolina Panthers: All the hype was surrounding Cam Newton in this game as he made his NFL debut. Anderson just had 1 tackle with 2 assists in the game.
Brent Bowden-P, Jacksonville Jaguars: Little bit of a trick to this one. Bowden was signed on Saturday. The Jags were demolished by the Patriots last Thursday.
Roc Carmichael-CB, Houston Texans: Roc didn't make his debut for the Texans unfortunately. Carmichael injured his shoulder and had to miss the game.
Kam Chancellor-S, Seattle Seahawks: Chancellor stopped Chargers' RB Mike Tolbert for a loss of 1 yard and later on the same series stopped Ryan Matthews after a gain of 1 yard. Kam was strong in run support at Tech and that still shows through at the NFL level.
David Clowney-WR, Carolina Panthers: The burner at WR didn't have any receptions (2 passes targeted to him were incomplete, I don't know if he dropped them or they were inaccurate passes) but he did have a chance to show off his speed on an end-around, gaining the Panthers 11 yards and a first down.
Chris Ellis-LB, Pittsburgh Steelers: The former DE now LB tallied one tackle and one assist.
Darren Evans-RB, Indianapolis Colts: The hometown boy was handed the ball 8 times and gained 52 yards, including a long rush of 23 yards. Evans had rushes of 18 and 23 on the final drive of a preseason game. Oh, and he had a tackle after Dan Orlovsky tossed a pick.
Brandon Flowers-CB, Kansas City Chiefs: Flowers did not play.
Steven Friday-DE, Houston Texans: Almost missed this one because he's not listed on the NFL site but Friday actually had 1.5 sack against the Jets.
Vincent Fuller-S, Tennessee Titans: Fuller had a tackle and an assist
John Graves-DE, Houston Texans: Graves had a tackle in the game against the Jets.
Cody Grimm-S, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Grimm started the game and totaled two tackles in the game.
DeAngelo Hall-CB, Washington Redskins: DeAngelo Hall started the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers and earned a tackle and an assist. Hall showed his normal attitude by getting in the face of Antonio Brown after the tackle.
Justin Harper-WR, Baltimore Ravens: Harper hauled in two passes for 17 yards from Tyrod Taylor (more on him later). Harper was the target on two consecutive passes at the end of the game as Taylor was trying to lead the Ravens to a tie in the redzone, but both passes were incomplete.
Jeff King-TE, Arizona Cardinals: The new Cardinal had 0 receptions and was only a target on one pass.
Josh Morgan-WR, San Francisco 49ers: 0.
Carlton Powell-DT, Atlanta Falcons: Like Bowden, Powell just got signed so he didn't get to play in the game.
Pierson Prioleau-DB, New Orleans Saints: Couldn't find anything.
Eddie Royal-WR, Denver Broncos: Eddie missed the first preseason game.
Darryl Tapp-DE, Philadelphia Eagles: Tapp started the game off well by dropping Ray Rice for a 6 yard loss and then sacked fellow Hokie Tyrod Taylor twice, once for a 5-yard loss and again for a 10-yard loss.
Tyrod Taylor-QB, Baltimore Ravens: Tyrod's debut was...interesting. He hit 19 of 28 passes (67.9%) for 179 yards but threw for 2 INTs. Taylor also ran for 59 yards on 6 carries, including runs of 16, 12, and 13 yards. Tyrod was sacked 5 times by the Eagles. So, he had some good runs (forced by bad pass protection) but also threw two picks. (Also, unless I read this wrong, he got tackled by LeSean McCoy of the Eagles...who is a running back.)
Mike Vick-QB, Philadelphia Eagles: The other Hokie QB in the the Eagles/Ravens game was efficient and then on the bench after one series. Vick completed 4 of 6 passes (66.7%) for 74 yards and a touchdown. Vick had a really good 42-yard pass on the run to Riley Cooper.
Ryan Williams-RB, Arizona Cardinals: Williams only got 4 touches but earned 21 yards on the ground, including a 11-yard rush. Williams also caught a pass out of the backfield for a 23-yard gain.
Jason Worilds-LB, Pittsburgh Steelers: Worilds did not accumulate any stats.
