Hokies Nab Camp Offer, Defensive Back Shawn Payne

Streeter Lecka

The Virginia Tech Hokies football program has added commitment No. 11 to their 2014 class tonight with the commitment of L.C. Bird High School safety Shawn Payne. 247Sports' affiliate VT Scoop was the first to break the news via Twitter, followed by Rivals' Virginia Tech site,

Payne's commitment is the third such commitment by a secondary player in the Hokies' 2014 class as players are currently classified, and considering the number of defensive back commitments the Hokies received in 2013, they are now at about full capacity at those positions going forward. While, because of those commitments, defensive back was no longer as dire a need as some other positions, Tech coaches were extremely impressed by what Payne showed two weeks ago at the Hokies' summer camp, enough so to offer him.

Payne, who is listed as a 6'2"/6'3" 180 pound safety according to the one of the two recruiting sites which have a player profile for him (247Sports and Rivals), had an offer from Charlotte as well as Virginia Tech. He is not ranked or rated by either site and neither ESPN Recruiting Nation nor Scout had a recruiting profile on him. His primary recruiter was Shane Beamer.

While Payne's commitment won't send any Hokie fans over the moon, know that Tech has had much success in the past from offering camp guys, as they get to see them in person, often before any other school can jump on them. So while he is not currently ranked/rated or even known by two of the four major recruiting services, expect him to be by the time National Signing Day comes around. And if not, who cares? The Hokies' coaches have proven to be better talent evaluators than national recruiting experts in the past anyway.

Since there is such a lack of information, however, this is all that we can give you on Payne for right now. But when we can break down his highlight tape or give you more of a complete analysis of his commitment, we will do so.
