The Palm Beach County Sports Commission unveiled their list of 30 college football kickers who were chosen to their pre-season watch list for the Lou Groza Award. Virginia Tech rising senior kicker Cody Journell made the watch list, and will be in consideration for the award.
The Groza Award, as it is more commonly known, is awarded annually to the top kicker in the country. Journell finished his 2012 season with the Hokies by making 20-of-25 kicks with a long of 42 yards. He also made 34 of his 36 extra points, good for 94 points on the season.
Journell had previously been suspended after a December 2011 arrest where he was allegedly part of an armed robbery at the residence of former Virginia Tech basketball player Dorenzo Hudson. He plead down to a misdemeanor in court and was reinstated last summer.
Journell joins fellow teammates Logan Thomas and James Gayle in being named to a pre-season watch list, as Thomas was named to the Maxwell Award watch list and Gayle the Bednarik Award watch list Monday.
