Virginia Tech Set to Play Series with Penn State

Virginia Tech has agreed to a home-and-home series with Penn State beginning in 2022 in Blacksburg. A true freshman playing in the last game of the series would be eight years old right now. So, don't hold your breath is what I'm saying.

In news that won't matter until nearly a decade from now, Virginia Tech and Penn State are set to play for the first time ever in the regular season with a home-and-home series in 2022-2023. I don't say "in the regular season" because the two have met before in post-season play, but because for all we know we could play them every year in the post-season from now until 2022. That won't happen, though.

A quick actual note that this is not the replacement for Wisconsin, and that announcement will probably be made at some point in the near future.

Anywho, the Hokies get the first home game of the season, welcoming the Nittany Lions to Frank Beamer Turf at Worsham Field in Lane Stadium presented by K-Guard in 2022. No word yet on where you can park your hover cars. Tech will then teleport to Happy Valley in 2023 for the tail-end of the series that you can watch on your laser-def TV while relaxing in your hover chair. Get it? IT'S IN THE FUTURE!

Current Tech Athletic Director Jim Weaver is a Penn State alum, playing center and linebacker for the Nittany Lions before going on to coach as an assistant for six years. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a picture of him in his pads. Rats. Given his background, it's a little shocking that this hasn't been announced until now.

Here's a quick look at the confirmed games for 2022, barring re-alignment and space invaders:

  • Penn State (H), West Virginia (H), Duke, Georgia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Virginia, Boston College, NC State.

And the confirmed games for 2023:

  • Penn State (A), Duke, Georgia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Virginia, Boston College, Florida State.

What does all of this mean? Absolutely nothing. There's no telling which programs are going to be strong in two years, why worry about a decade from now?

Here's a look at anniversaries/birthdays in 2022 and 2023:

  • E.T. will be 40 years old in 2022 and Return of the Jedi will be 40 years old in 2023.
  • The Godfather will be FIFTY in 2022.
  • Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers will be 20 years old in 2022.
  • Disney's Aladdin will be 30 years old in 2022. What.
  • Jurassic Park will be 30 years old in 2023. Hold on to yer butts.
  • Rage Against the Machine's self-titled debut album will be 30 in 2022.
What are your thoughts on playing Penn State...regardless of whether either team is worth a damn in ten-ish years?
