Hokies Basketball: Tech In The Running for South Florida Transfer John Egbunu

The big man will visit Blacksburg before making his final decision.

6'10" center John Egbunu will take a visit to Virginia Tech before deciding among an impressive list of potential transfer destinations.

As a freshman, the Nigerian born Egbunu averaged 7.4 PPG, 6.2 RPG and 1.3 blocks for the South Florida Bulls. He shot 58.9 % from the field and pulled down 198 rebounds, 31 more than the Hokies' leading rebounder Jarell Eddie.

Egbunu began his high school career in Georgia before moving to Fort Walton Beach High School in Florida for his junior and senior seasons. ESPN rated him a four star recruit and the 72nd player in the nation as well as seventh best at his position.

You may be wondering how Tech is involved in such a highly coveted big man, and that's answered by Buzz Williams' staff.

Assistant coach Steve Roccaforte recruited Egbunu while he was on staff at South Florida so it's reasonable to think that Tech is a getting a real look here.

If we can cue up the broken record now, Tech is in dire straits regarding big man depth. Egbunu would join Joey van Zegeren and Satchel Pierce to give the Hokies an unprecedented three players at the five spot who possess the requisite center size.

Egbunu is a very good athlete and runs the floor very well for a big man. You can see his surprising speed in the clip below against Oklahoma State. The other highlights show him at the NBPA Top 100 Camp where he turned quite a few heads as a high school senior.

We'll be back with more updates as Buzz continues to amass personnel as he attempts to change the Hokie basketball culture on the fly.
