Your newest DB Davon Morgan (@Morgan_2Ready) played for the PIFL Richmond Raiders (@RICRaiders), coached by former #Eagles DB James Fuller.
— Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) May 20, 2014
Davon Morgan was doing just fine with the Richmond Raiders of the Professional Indoor Football League. Continuing to play a sport he loved, and hoping for another shot at playing on NFL Sundays. It appears he has it, as Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly was duly impressed with Morgan's tryout.
As you can see above, there is a connection between Morgan's coach in Richmond and the Eagles organization, and half the battle is knowing the right people. Morgan finished his VT career with a flourish, notching 82 tackles in 2010, and finally picking off five balls in his last six games after missing out on countless opportunities his prior 40 games. Number 2 favored big hits, and often missed out on errant passes because he was preparing to light the receiver up.
He was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Tech by the New York Jets in 2011, but was unable to make the squad, and after sitting out of football for all of 2011, he signed with Richmond in 2012. This is definitely what you would consider a long-shot, but it's noteworthy due to the lengthy layoff(s). One has to wonder if he hadn't had the major knee injury in 2008 if he might have been another of the early draft picks that the VT D-block can boast. After all, he played as a true FR in 2007 and had won the starting job in 2008, he was well on his way until the injury stripped him of some burst.
We wish Davon the best of luck in his comeback (? is that the right word?) attempt. Here is a video of his highlights from Richmond:
Not a bad body of work. Looks like he could be a sleeper, certainly hasn't lost anything.
And because it's his only YouTube highlight in a VT uniform, we'll go with the sarcastaball approach here and show you Davon's first INT after 40 games at VT:
