Virginia Tech running back Shai McKenzie announced on his personal Twitter account Sunday afternoon that his 2014 season was over. McKenzie suffered another ACL injury late during Saturday's win over Western Michigan after he's already carried the ball 18 times for 87 yards and a 4-yard touchdown run.
VT coaches (including Frank Beamer) spoke to the possibility that McKenzie would be out for an extended period of time in the post game press conferences, but no one seemed to know for sure the extent of the injury. Extended tests performed Sunday appear to have confirmed the severity.
McKenzie represents a marked loss for the Hokies, who haven't been without injury issues of late. The Hokies really discovered their offensive momentum after working in McKenzie and fellow running back (and leading rusher against WMU) Marshawn Williams. Williams will have to carry the load even more now than McKenzie will miss the rest of the year.
