Virginia Tech Basketball Drops Opener

Alabama State Prevails In Cassell 85-82

Michael Shroyer-USA TODAY Sports

Buzz Williams and Virginia Tech have high hopes this season.  The first game of the season was held tonight in the friendly confines of Cassell Coliseum, and the Alabama State Hornets were the guest.  The Hornets, from the SWAC were not living the guest first mentality.  The Jackets came into Cassell and handed Buzz's Boys a 85-82 loss that truly stung.  Zach LeDay led the charge for the Hokies pouring in 26 points and grabbing 15 boards.  While the Hokies would have been happier with the "W", LeDay's double double should afford the Hokies some solace for a better future.

The Jackets were paced by Jamel Waters who was hot early and often, and finished with 21 points for the road team. The Hokies lace them up again on Wednesday, back at Cassell against Jacksonville State. The Hokies left some meat on the bone, missing 15 free throws. Looks like Buzz has something to work on early this week.
