The No. 4 seed Virginia Tech women’s soccer team will be advancing to the second round of the 2015 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championships after a 4-0 win over the Cincinnati Bearcats at Thompson Field on Saturday. With the win, Tech improves to 15-3-2 on the season.
The Hokies who led 1-0 at halftime, scored two goals in the first 12 minutes of the second half to increase the lead 3-0. Alani Johnson had two goals on the game while Candace Cephers and Murielle Tiernan both had one a piece in the impressive 4-0 victory.
During the first half with a one goal lead, Tiernan hit a shot inside the penalty box but that shot was denied by Cincinnati goalkeeper Sam Pavlika. The ball then ended up in the direction of Johnson, who put the ball into the empty net increasing the lead 2-0. Just four minutes later Johnson scored again, a shot from 10-yards out. Cephers sealed the 4-0 victory after she scored a header in at the near post after a corner kick from Kallie Peurifoy.
Tech outshot Cincinnati 17-3 on the game including a 11-1 advantage in shots on goal. They also had a 10-1 advantage on corner kicks.
The Hokies will next travel to University Park, State College, Penn. where they will face Ohio State on Nov. 20 at 3 p.m.
