On an emotional day where the Commonwealth Cup stayed in Blacksburg, the Hokies basketball team was also victorious. After a tough loss against Iowa State last night, they rebounded with an exciting 82-77 overtime win over the UAB Blazers. Both teams came into the game with identical 3-2 records and played a tough, hard-fought game throughout.
Seth Allen and Chris Clarke had tremendous performances for the Hokies. Allen posted his first 20 plus point game as a Hokie, finishing the game with 23 points, and showing everyone his potential as a scoring guard. Chris Clarke chipped in with 10 points, but his real impact was in the rebounding department, notching 16 boards.
The Hokies never seemed to garner momentum in the first and found themselves trailing by 8 almost six minutes deep into the second half. A Zach LeDay dunk ignited an 11-2 Hokies run, as they gained a 5 point advantage over the Blazers. But UAB fought back, and Virginia Tech needed a couple of clutch shots from Seth Allen and more exponentially clutch free throws from Zach LeDay to force overtime. The Hokies were able to outscore the Blazers 11-6 by playing strong defense in the extra period, carrying them to a win.
