Johnny Hamilton Signs With VT

The 7-ft visitor from this past weekend has signed with Buzz Williams and the Hokies

Johnny Hamilton, from Jacksonville College (TX) has signed to play for Virginia Tech. He averaged 9 points and 8 rebounds per contest last season at Jacksonville College.

Hamilton is a long, athletic 7-footer that can rebound the basketball and protect the rim. From a movement standpoint he will compete right away for coach Buzz Williams as he brings the much needed size and athleticism for the Hokies to battle night in and night out in the ACC.

Offensively, Hamilton needs to keep working on his finishing around the rim, which I am sure will be an emphasis from day one. I do not think he will ever have any plays that run through him while in orange and maroon, but he will surely have some opportunities to put the ball up after collecting an offensive rebound, which will be his primary point scoring opportunities.

Defensively, Hamilton shines. He is a very solid on ball defender for his size, which allows him to alter shots around the basket. He recorded 112 blocks in 26 contest this past season and consistently rebounded the ball efficiently on both ends of the court.

Overall, Hamilton is a nice pickup and adds much needed size at a position of need.

The Hokies more than likely will look to take at least one more player in the 2015 class. In my opinion, Deshawn Freeman or Ty Outlaw are the most likely candidates. However, with the addition of Hamilton the Hokies are full in terms of scholarships, so more attrition may happen if Buzz decides to continue revamping the talent level in Blacksburg.

Go Hokies!
