Hokie Nation is sad today. Jim Weaver, former Virginia Tech athletics director has passed away at the age of 70.

Jim served Virginia Tech as a leader who was known for doing things "the right way." His character helped guide the Hokies athletic department for more than 16 years, 1997-2013. His life was a journey that took him from student-athlete to administrator to visionary. He played for the late-great Joe Paterno at Penn State who he credited and quoted often.

At Virginia Tech he helped build a profitable, sustainable, high-character and well-managed athletic program that performed well on and off the field. Student-athletes were his top-priority, but not because they were athletes, but because they were people. He wanted to grow a brand, but he knew the best way to do that was to help grow and lead the people that were apart of it.

Jim led Virginia Tech from the Atlantic-10 athletic conference to the Big East and finally to the ACC which has propelled the Hokies into the nations elite in every collegiate sport they participate in. It was under his guidance and forward-thinking fiber that has given joy to thousands of fans and colleagues.

Jim, you will always be admired and missed for the man you were, but more importantly you will be remembered by those that you have had an impact on. Rest In Peace and Go Hokies!
