In 2008, Virginia Tech faced off against the mighty machine that is Furman football. They won the game against the Paladins 24-7. That score is not really that surprising. What surprised me during the research was that Tech was leading only 3-0 at halftime. Now keep in mind, that edition of the Hokies finished up the season at the Orange Bowl. They had just been upset against East Carolina to begin the season in Charlotte, NC.. The E.C.U. game was special because they played the game in Charlotte, sort of a precursor to the big early match ups. 72,169 fans watched the Pirates upset the Hokies in a 27-22 nail biter. Tech could have really phoned in the game against Furman the following week, and tried to. On the Furman Athletics website, the game was remembered this way:
Virginia Tech converted a pair of third quarter turnovers into touchdowns to break open a tentative second half lead en route to a 24-7 win over Furman in football action Saturday afternoon in front of 66,233 fans at Lane Stadium.
I'm certainly not saying that the up and coming Paladins have a shot against the post-Buckeye Hokies, but I didn't think East Carolina had a shot last year. If you are mad at yourself, or are otherwise bored. Click the link to watch the gamefilm:
This is Week 2 on our season quest, Hokies. We may not end up 1-0, but certainly we should be 1-1 after this contest. The lesson is that we must prepare against every foe. The Paladins have circled this game all summer. This is their "Ohio State". We have to be cognizant of that. The Hokies can basically dress and win this one, but we thought that back in 2008. On the plus side we are 5-0 lifetime against Furman. They also didn't set the world afire with a 3-9 record last year.
