Hokies Defeat #12 Mountaineers

The #13 VT women's soccer squad defeated the #12 WVU team on Sunday.

On Sunday Virginia Tech’s 2015 Women’s soccer squad took a huge step toward the goal of improving on their solid 2014 season.  After defeating the Indiana Hoosiers on Friday the team punctuated their performance at the Hoosier Classic with a victory over the number 12 West Virginia Mountaineers.

The Hokies started off slow and remained defensive for the preponderance of the first half.   After starting the second half scoreless VT stalwarts Murielle Tiernan and Ashley Meier combined to score when Meier passed to Tiernan who made the initial goal.  WVU’s Kailey Utley answered a few minutes later with a Mountaineer goal before Virginia Tech’s Candace Cephers solidified the Hokie victory with the second Hokie goal.

With this victory Virginia Tech evens up the series between the two teams 3-3. The win also represents the third game in a row that the Hokie women’s soccer squad has defeated the Mountaineers.

VPI opens their home efforts on August 28, 2015 against James Madison at Thompson Field in Blacksburg.   The Hokies have historically struggled with the Dukes and trail in the series, 4-12-1. As was the case with WVU, Virginia Tech enters this match with a trend of victories, having defeated JMU in their last three matchups.  JMU lost their August 21 opener against number 25 Georgetown, 4-3.

With the first two Hokie efforts ending with victories, including one against a higher ranked team, the Virginia Tech women’s soccer team has started strong, and will look to maintain this solid early season performance.
