The 2015 preseason National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer rankings were released Monday. Last year Virginia Tech’s women’s squad ended the season with an impressive 16-6 record, and finished ranked 16 after being defeated by eighth ranked Penn State in the NCAA Tournament. Two ACC teams lead the preseason rankings. The Florida State Seminoles are number one with the Virginia Cavaliers a close second. The North Carolina Tar Heels at seventh and Notre Dame Fighting Irish at ninth round out the four ACC teams ranked ahead of the Fighting Gobblers. The Clemson Tigers complete the ACC showing, earning 22, for a total of six teams from the conference starting the season in the top 25.
The last time the Hokies defeated the Hoos was September 30, 2009 when they beat #18 UVA, 2-1. Since that time the Cavaliers have dominated VT, shutting out the Hokies over the next five matches by a combined score of 0-17. UVA leads the series 14-3-1. Unfortunately, VPI will have to wait to exact revenge as the two universities will not meet, on the women’s soccer field, for the first time in over a decade. Regardless, the women of Virginia Tech soccer will have their hands full seeking to avenge last year's defeats at the hands of UNC, Wake Forest, National Champions FSU, and Notre Dame.
Hokie fans have an opportunity to watch at least eight matches via online broadcasts on either ESPN3 or Hokie Xtra. The potential for other games to be broadcast exists, depending on whether or not other universities choose to transmit Hokie away games against their respective teams.
The Virginia Tech Women’s Soccer Team begins their efforts August 21 at the Indiana Tournament a week after an exhibition game against Marshall’s Thundering Herd. Their first home game of the season is against James Madison University August 28. Click here to see the complete VT Women’s Soccer schedule.
