With NFL week two in the bag Gobbler Country takes a look at how former Hokie players performed.
Tyrod Taylor – Buffalo Bills – Last week Tyrod had the best starting debut of a Hokie QB in the history of the NFL. His efforts this week, against the New England Patriots, while valiant, certainly suffered. The most startling statistic is the astounding eight sacks for a total loss of 53 yards that Tyrod endured. Taylor’s first possession effort was solid, and he engineered an 80 yard touchdown drive to take the lead 7-0. The drive primarily featured Buffalo’s rushing attack, and Tyrod had a 23 yard scramble, which was the longest play of the drive. After that initial drive it was all Patriots all the time until the fourth quarter. Tyrod was able to find life in the last period of regulation where he led three touchdown scoring drives. He had a nice 32 yard TD pass to Robert Woods and followed that scoring drive with another culminating in a seven yard rushing touchdown by number five. Taylor finished his comeback effort with a 24 yard pass to second year receiver Sammy Watkins before the Patriots kicked a field goal and the Bills were unable to respond when Tyrod threw an interception on the first play of the ensuing drive. Tyrod’s accuracy continued to impress and he was 23 of 30 for 242 yards with an 8.1 yard average. He threw three TDs and three INTs, and also added 43 yards rushing on five attempts with one rushing touchdown. In the end the Bills fell to Belichick and company, 32-40.
Corey Fuller – Detroit Lions – Fuller did not record a reception for the second game in a row.
Eddie Royal – Chicago Bears – With Alshon Jeffery out for the game Chicago looked to its other veteran receivers to pick up the slack. Eddie Royal was targeted the most, eight times, and led the Bears with seven total receptions. He was fourth in receiving yards with 41. He had a long of 15 yards and an average of 5.9 yards. Despite his efforts Chicago was destroyed, 23-48, by Arizona.
Duane Brown – Houston Texans: The Pro-Bowl offensive lineman did not play this weekend due to a hand injury.
Will Montgomery – Chicago Bears – Montgomery fumbled a snap that was recovered by backup QB, Jimmy Clausen during the Bears loss to the Cardinals.
Kam Chancellor – Seattle Seahawks – Chancellor continued his hold out against the Super Bowl winning Seahawks through week two. The Legion of Boom certainly felt his absence. Aaron Rogers was able to complete 76% of his passes for 249 yards and 2 TDs. But, now Seahawks fans can rejoice as it appears Chancellor has ended his holdout and will return to the field.
Antone Exum Jr. – Minnesota Vikings – Antone had a single tackle against Detroit.
Kyshoen Jarrett – Washington Redskins – Jarrett had three tackles against the Rams.
DeAngelo Hall – Washington Redskins – Hall had four tackles in the Redskins’ victory against the Saint Louis Rams.
Kyle Fuller – Chicago Bears – Fuller recorded a single tackle in the Bears loss to Arizona.
Jayron Hosley – New York Giants – Hosley had eight tackles in New Yorks loss to Atlanta. The Giants' secondary woes continue as they were gashed by Matt Ryan for 363 yards. In both games the Giants have played the defense has allowed 350+ yards passing.
Brandon Flowers – San Diego Chargers – Flowers had two tackles during the San Diego loss to Cincinnati. San Diego struggled against the air threat from the Bengals, allowing Andy Dalton to go 16 of 26 for 214 yards, an 8.2 yard average, and three touchdowns. San Diego’s lack of a pass rush certainly put the secondary in a bad position when they failed to record a single sack.
Darryl Tapp – Detroit Lions – The Hokie veteran recorded two tackles in Sunday’s defeat against the Vikings.
