The No. 10 ranked Virginia Tech Hokies women’s soccer team responded to their draw with Tennessee by defeating the Longwood Lancers 4-2 Wednesday evening at Thompson Field. With that victory VPI improves to 4-0-1 on the season.

The Hokies started quickly and jumped out to a 2-0 lead within the first twenty minutes of the game. The initial Hokie goal was provided by ACC standout Ashley Meier 13 minutes into the first half off a Jordan Coburn assist. A few minutes later Murielle Tiernan scored VPI’s second goal off a pass from Meier. That goal marked Tiernan’s 30th, and made her VT’s all-time leading goal scorer. Longwood failed to have a single shot during the entirety of the first half, and the two squads entered the second period 2-0.

Longwood’s dearth of offensive presentation rectified itself in the second half, and by the 76th minute the Lancers tied the game 2-2. The Hokies answered when Kallie Peurifoy passed the ball to Meier who scored her second goal of the game. With one minute left in regulation Alani Johnson earned her first goal of the season, cementing the Hokie’s victory, 4-2.

VT continued the trend of outshooting their opponent. VPI outshot the Lancers a lopsided 27-3. Additionally the Hokies had eight corner kicks while Longwood failed to register even one.

The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team now looks to Friday when the UNC Greensboro Spartans come to call in Blackburg. UNCG is coming off a 2-0 victory over Eastern Kentucky after losing the first three matches of their season. UNCG’s women’s squad has been outscored 4-8 and is 1-3 on the season.

The Hokies face the Spartans Friday, September 4, at 7 PM EST.
