The No.10 Virginia Tech women’s soccer team improved their record to 5-0-1 when they defeated the UNC Greensboro Spartans on Friday night in Blacksburg. The Hokies have been undefeated this season, but the 2-0 victory over UNCG is VT’s first shut out of the year.
Virginia Tech’s Caroline Kerns earned her first collegiate goal with help from Bria Dixon to put the Hokies up 1-0 late in the first period. Jordan Coburn’s corner kick, in the second half, resulted in Murielle Tiernan netting the last score of the game.
The Hokies remained in control for the entirety of the game, and dominated every facet of the match. Virginia Tech outshot UNC Greensboro 22-1. The Hokies had eight shots on goal, while the Spartans failed to have a single shot on goal. VPI left the game with 13 corner kicks while UNCG had only one. With the victory, Virginia Tech takes control of the series against UNCG, 5-4, and extends the Hokie winning streak against the Spartans to four games in a row.
The Friday night match concluded the marathon of home games for the women’s squad. The Hokies will now travel to Richmond and face the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams Sunday, September 6. When the two squads met last year the Hokies destroyed VCU, 6-0. Virginia Tech leads the series against the Rams, 5-1-1.
