Virginia Tech 13 North Carolina 3, Halftime Update

Take a quick look at the halftime stats!

Peter Casey-USA TODAY Sports

The Hokies are in Chapel Hill, NC for a road A.C.C. contest today. The first half was a soggy affair, with Hurricane Matthew making its grand exit from the Carolinas.  North Carolina won the toss, and deferred.  The Hokies had a quick three and out, and UNC put together a drive, but failed to convert a fourth and one.  Greg Stroman picked off Mitch Trubisky to put the Hokies in the Carolina red zone.  Virginia Tech was stymied, and Joey Slye put the Hokies on the board to take a 3-0 lead.  The 35 yard FG was close, but sneaked through.  The Hokies got another turnover when Terrell Edmunds recovered a Tarheel fumble.  The Hokies offense was struggling with elements, and Carolina's defense was handcuffing Jerod Evans.  Joey Slye was able to hit a 28 yarder, and the Hokies led 6-0 late in the first quarter.

After both teams traded punts, the Hokies decided to give the Tarheels a gift.  The was a bad QB/center exchange, and the Tarheels pounced on the ball.  UNC drove down the field, but had to settle for a 28 yard FG.  The Hokies responded with the best drive thus far.  After getting down to the UNC 16, Jerod Evans fumbled on a tough run.  The 12 play drive resulted in no points for the Hokies.  The Hokies quickly got the ball back, and this time would not be denied.  Following a 28 yard pass to Bucky Hodges, Jerod Evans hit Chris Cunningham for the first TD of the game. 13-3 Hokies, late in the first.
