Hokies’ Athletic Director Signs Extension Through 2024

Whit Babcock signs a well-deserved extension. Great move on both sides of the deal.

Although he has not been here long, Whit Babcock has impressed people both inside and outside the organization. As a result, Babcock was rewarded with an eight-year extension through 2024 to stay with Virginia Tech as the athletic director.

In his first few years in Blacksburg, Babcock faced multiple important decisions, namely hiring the head coaches for basketball and football. It is hard to critique either decision, as Buzz Williams and Justin Fuente have each done phenomenal jobs leading their teams.

Another key relationship which led to this extension was Babcock’s friendship with Dr. Sands, Virginia Tech’s President. Sands spoke very highly of the athletic director following the decision to extend him.

“Whit has done an outstanding job during his short tenure here, leading our athletics program with integrity, professionalism, and unrelenting commitment to excellence,” Virginia Tech President Tim Sands said. “More than that, he has embraced the spirit of Virginia Tech, which has been reflected in the quality and character of his coaches and staff, and the accomplishments of our student-athletes both on and off the field. We hope to keep Whit and his family in Blacksburg for many years to come.”

Babcock’s body of work in the last two years makes this seem like a slam dunk decision for the Hokies’ athletic department and Board of Visitors. If he continues his strong decision making, there’s no reason why Babcock will not be in Blacksburg to see the end of his new extension.
