Two Virginia Tech Basketball Players To Transfer

Jalen Hudson and Satchel Pierce have decided to transfer from Virginia Tech.

Over the past 48 hours, two Virginia Tech men's basketball players have decided to transfer. Jalen Hudson announced on Tuesday that he would be leaving the Virginia Tech program, which came a day after Satchel Pierce announced via twitter that he had made the decision to transfer. Both Hudson and Pierce were sophomores that have contributed significantly on and off the court to the program that Buzz Williams has built over his first two seasons in Blacksburg.

Hudson committed to the Hokies while James Johnson was the head coach and chose to honor his commitment when Buzz Williams was offered the job. Over his first two seasons he averaged 7.7 points per game in his 67 appearances. He showed flashes of being an electric player when attacking the basket, but was not able to put multiple consistent games together as a Hokie. His future team is getting a solid defensive guard with very good athleticism. Offensively, he has the ability to take a game over, but must mature mentally to become a more consistent contributor.

Pierce originally committed to Buzz Williams while he was at Marquette, but chose to follow Buzz to Blacksburg. He averaged 2.6 points per game while making 51 appearances as a Hokie. The 7-footer from Barberton, Ohio was more of a role player in his sophomore season as the Hokies played a 4-guard lineup most of the season to create mismatches offensively. His future team is getting a physical big man that can contribute defensively, but needs to develop further offensively as he must sit out a year due to NCAA regulations.

Buzz Williams will likely turn to graduate transfer options or junior college prospects to fill the void these two leave behind. There are several traditional transfer options for the Hokies, but those players will be required to sit out a year, which limits the contributions you can make immediately. While I do not see any other attritions taking place there is always the possibility, especially with Devin Wilson working to join the football program where I think he has much more potential. These two attritions mark the 9th and 10th players to leave the Hokies program since Buzz Williams joined the Hokies Athletic Department, but Buzz demands a level of toughness and maturity that is not always easy to adapt to. I think the Hokies will be a much more dangerous team going forward and I wish Satch and Jalen the best.
