Jerod Evans is one of the best QBs in the country?!

When someone talks about the best QBs in the country this year, who comes to mind? Lamar Jackson, winner of the September Heisman? Deshaun Watson, the preseason Heisman favorite? Or maybe Greg Ward Jr, the man leading Houston's charge towards the CFP?

Well, Jerod Evans might be worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as those aforementioned QBs. According to ESPN.com, Evans has the fourth best QB rating in the country, with a rating of 185.8. To put that rating in context, the three QBs mentioned earlier are at 11th (Jackson, 176.7), 30th (Ward Jr., 155.0) and 85th (Watson, 130.2).

Furthermore, Evans has had a better season up to this point than either Ward or Watson. Evans has passed for 970 yards, with 13 passing TDs and just 1 INT. Meanwhile, Ward has passed for 936 yards, but just 5 TDs and 2 INTs. Watson has been perhaps the more disappointing, passing for 996 yards, 9 TDs and 4 INTs, with no signature wins thus far; unlike Ward Jr who led Houston to a win over Oklahoma in week 1 (which has since become less impressive with OU's loss to Ohio St.).

But for Hokie fans, Evans has been everything they wanted and then some. He has only accounted for one turnover, an INT off the hands of the reliable Isaiah Ford. Evans has also shown his ability to scramble and run when the play breaks down, even showing some flashes of Vick and Taylor during his highlight-reel 55 yard TD run against ECU last weekend.

With everything going well so far, Evans is showing Hokie fans firsthand what this offense can do with Justin Fuente's system in place and when its firing on all cylinders. In fact, Virginia Tech is one of only two teams, (Louisville being the other), who have scored over 100 points against FBS level teams in the past two weeks combined. But the Hokies are still not getting the respect that many Hokie fans probably think they deserve.

And that comes back to the loss to Tennessee where the Hokies literally fumbled the game away. Thankfully Coach Fuente has emphasized ball security since that game and the Hokies haven't fumbled once in the two games following that loss.

Now the Hokies have their bye, which is good for them as they get to rest up before they go through a difficult stretch in ACC play. This four game stretch will determine whether this season will be a success or not. But for now, Jerod Evans is showing that Justin Fuente was the right man for the job.
