Virginia Tech Needs To Go 1-0

The Coastal is out of reach. The Hokies are playing for bowl prestige from here on out.

NCAA Football: Virginia Tech at Miami Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Hurricanes beat the Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday night. It was a bit of a mojo killer for the Hokies, but the season moves on. Virginia Tech will travel to Atlanta this weekend to take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, with a ton on the line. Best case scenario for the Hokies is simple: win out, and play in a respectable bowl game. Lose this weekend, or to that school up north, and the tenor of the season is drastically different. Virginia Tech has lost to two top 10 teams this year. There is no shame in that.

I predicted that this year’s team may be “better”, but have a worse record. I figured Miami would win the Coastal, which barring a major ‘Canes break down, seems inevitable. That’s o.k.. The youth of this team is staggering, and guys are getting valuable reps all over the place. The season would be nice if we finish 10-2. Georgia Tech is going to be an issue for us. This is the first year in recent memory that we haven’t had the benefit of a bye before facing the Jackets. Paul Johnson has some injuries of his own to account for, but he always seems to pull out all the stops against the Hokies.

If the Hokies can go 1-0 this weekend, we will play in a damn good bowl game. Lose this one, and perhaps another, see you in Charlotte. (again)
